Healthcare should not be a "trillion dollar industry".

It shouldn't be an industry at all.

Healthcare is a human right.

Stark warning as NHS short staffing found to 'cause 4,000 extra deaths a year' A review has revealed the 'life-or-death implications for patients' when nurses and doctors are quitting in huge numbers as NHS struggles with 150,000 staffing shortfall

NHS short staffing associated with at least 4,000 extra deaths annually.

High staff turnover & reliance on agency workers lead to severe consequences, esp. in A&Es.

Stable, well-staffed workforce needed for patient safety & quality care #ResuscitateEmergencyCare

This is awful to read. How are there no repercussions for those responsible?!? I feel so much for the children and their families. Parents should be able to trust in schools to provide care and compassion.

editorial from @bmj.com and paper: Poor staff retention is associated with higher patient mortality. Have said it before & I’ll say it again. If you don’t care for the carers, they cannot care for their patients.

When I was thinking about leaving medicine, I was feeling lost.

To be honest, I was struggling - tired from the long training, balancing work and family life.

I didn't ask for support but I wasn't offered any either.

What advice could have helped me?

Thanks. I decided to stick within medicine but wanted to leave the NHS and so have switched to the less intense specialty of occupational medicine. I’ve always been into medical education and human factors so hoping to transfer and utilise these skills. For now I’m just getting settled into things.

Your profile name seems so suggest you have now returned? How are you finding it?

Thanks. I only recently moved, so far though it’s going well thank you. Changing careers does mean starting again so there is some hard work (and exams!) involved at the start but I know that long term this is the right move for me and our family.

The NHS desperately needs more compassionate leaders at the top: people who care, listen, and understand. Only then can we even begin to understand the staffing crisis and create a system where everyone feels valued.

I agree completely as someone who has recently changed careers because I didn’t feel I could be both a good mother and a good anaesthetist. Many people do find a balance between the two but I do believe that many, like me, must also struggle.

All true. There is a commonly acknowledged feeling amongst new mothers that once you have children you become a different “new” person. I never appreciated how profound this metamorphosis would be and how I would struggle to find my new identity at work especially.
