You're making me miss Lancaster; it's been too long since I've been back, gotta get down there sometime

(also not expecting actual answers to these questions unless you feel like it, mostly rhetorical and venting at the absurdity of everything Cass does and at the real harm it causes)

It's just the frustration I have at the lines they get to draw deciding what is "feminine" and "masculine" enough to be acceptable that's just absurd (what names are "boy" and "girl" names? I've met cis men and cis women with my name before, for example)

Like at some level, what counts as "social transition"? What level of gender conformity are we policing? When I was 12 and wore that tuxedo, I had never heard of trans people and wouldn't for multiple years, and even then wouldn't consider transition myself for multiple more years

It seems like she would be upset that my (evangelical, conservative) parents let me wear a tuxedo for my band concert in middle school as opposed to a black dress (a choice I made ostensibly bc the school provided the tuxedos but you had to provide your own dress and I didn't own a black dress)

That is GORGEOUS!

I really loved Wake Up Dead Man and also was 0% surprised to learn that Rian Johnson was raised evangelical and not Catholic because it showed in a lot of ways and this feels like one of those to me

We still have a whole state chockfull of anabaptist groups because historically it was hard to do elsewhere (Pennsylvania). It's not like the evidence of the cultural and religious divides within the people who claimed various Christianities aren't still deeply and easily visible!

The poultry farm receipt is for the chicken and the eggs. Per other responses, the eggs were $4/dozen, so the chicken was ~$10

That's fairβ€”it's very much in a vein of songs we would have congregationally sang at the evangelical churches I grew up in (but I like it more than many of those) so I'm accustomed to that kind of song as a congregational song even if it isn't the kind of song I sing congregationally now

A few throwback suggestions: "Testify to Love" by Avalon, "Glory to God Forever" by Fee, and "You Never Let Go" by Matt Redman

I'll go with five of my favorite classes from college (in no particular order):

1. Principles of Evolution
2. Literature and the Other Arts
3. Introduction to Weather and Climate
4. Organic Chemistry II
5. Social and Cultural Anthropology

(Also this thread reminded me of this song: www.instagram.com/p/DTvMw5hEZJM/)

And like you said there were deep problems with the evangelical church of my young childhood too (I prayed the sinner's prayer at age four because I was told I'd go to hell if I didn't!), but the push to all be megachurches and the open Christian Nationalism came later

30.01.2026 21:14 β€” πŸ‘ 10    πŸ” 1    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

As someone a bit younger than you who was evangelical WHILE a lot of this transition was happening, this thread is something I think a lot of folks miss! The evangelical church of my young childhood and the evangelical church I left at 20 were such different movements

Haha yeahhh, Blackboard is...not my favorite of the LMSes that I have had to use before and that also doesn't help!!

30.01.2026 19:50 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

ahhh, that makes sense. and that honestly would have been me too when I was in college in that case. Or I would have been attempting to submit an assignment on Blackboard that I knew nothing about for a class I hadn't even attended yet *just in case*

I used to email professors before class started but it was about disability accommodations...what do people have to email about their grades before class starts??

There are better ways. Real, substantive educational help is possible. But no. Just gonna throw these kids to AI

As someone who worked as a tutor in a program intended primarily for low income students, I cannot say enough how much I despise this

29.01.2026 13:05 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

When I lived in Texas, I called Ted Cruz and John Cornyn because they were my senators and told them the things I wanted. It matters to call the senators you are a constituent of, so I call Schumer and Gillibrand now

28.01.2026 23:23 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

I do think what their actual constituents (which I am for Schumer and Gillibrand) call in and say has a bigger impact than what people put in a comment section on the internet. And again, I am thankful for what they are doing

28.01.2026 23:20 β€” πŸ‘ 4    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

I have learned this about you before and I am also in my 20s but I forget that you are basically the same age as me* because I do tend to assume that I'm younger than everyone who uses this website
*technically I am slightly older than you since I was alive for a small part of the Clinton presidency

28.01.2026 22:18 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

Because I do think reforms are better than nothing but I also want them to know that their constituents don't think that's enough. I know there's limitations to what they can actually do as a minority party but I want them to know that we do care a lot

28.01.2026 20:53 β€” πŸ‘ 5    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Yeah, just saying not good enough feels...hollow. I saw the tweet with what Schumer said and it reminded me to call him and Gillibrand (I live in NY) and essentially say "thanks for not voting for DHS appropriations without reform and also ICE needs more than reform, it should be abolished"

28.01.2026 20:53 β€” πŸ‘ 5    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Can't imagine why anyone wouldn't want that

Had some of the best food of my life at that jobβ€”especially Afghan and Persian food

when I worked in refugee resettlement, there would frequently be like impromptu potlucks in the lunch room. Just everyone putting the food they brought (which sometimes was full casserole-dish size amounts that they intentionally brought to share) in the middle of the table

28.01.2026 18:32 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

hey we don't necessarily know that man was cis. trans men can be dumb too (said as a trans man-adjacent person) (also this is a joke)
