Doesn't mean you have to like or respect it, of course. Sometimes a film can just fail on its own terms, it's not just because it got away from the filmmaker. Barring inside knowledge I generally assume we're seeing something like what was intended.

For example I *loved* Harvest but I do think the chunk after the landlord shows up really lags, just when the tension should start to tighten. But I am so engaged by everything else in the film that its imperfection doesn't really matter to me, however 'unfocused' it feels to others

I think people tend to identify longer movies, often episodic, with a lot of ideas and lumpy or at least unclear pacing. So rather than a clear 'vision,' we get a bunch of pieces that do or do not come together, often based on the patience of the viewer.
