Still, this is a huge step, especially alongside docker a few years back, towards making TrueNAS more than *just* a storage platform for those of us who want that.

Yeah, it is frustrating that it's taken this long, although I can sort of understand their rationale; keep to "do one thing and do it right", especially with a limited team and budget.

Digging deeper, it would appear we are finally getting a full web-based file browser, with upload and TrueSearch integration, ACL management, and anonymous access, soon.

Early references to "TrueNAS WebShare" & "truenas-file-manager" amongst the recent push for the TrueSearch indexer has me excited for a potential resolution to NAS-100085: "Web GUI File Management" after all these years.

A performative and naïve part of me almost wants to do it more publicly just to see if someone would react, just so that I could ask, if they themselves would chat with me?

Something I omitted to point out further is also the political undertones of a project to offer a replacement to GNU tools under an MIT license.

uutils is certainly not unique in that regard, but still.

The stock answer for justifying Rust rewrites tends to be "memory safety", but I personally think what's more interesting is it's improved developer experience and opportunity for refactoring long-standing projects such as these with the benefits of hindsight.

There's promising signs of performance improvements (reported on as recently as just 4 hours ago in the case of uutils: github.com/uutils/coreu...), but also new features being offered. I'm particularly interested in their extensions, such as progress indicators for cp/mv:

I think the Baloo indexer (KDE) may be holding it busy but, since this worked before, the question remains why it didn't stop earlier, especially since this didn't happen to me before.

Looking closer at my particular case, it does appear to get logged by the systemd journal (have a look yourself via `journalctl -b-1` if you haven't already), although all I'm getting in way of an error here is "target is busy"

My system however seems to still reboot after a few minutes of waiting, but since my root has been unmounted long before that, I have no logs for what timeout (watchdog?) it is that finally pulls a reset.
