The assassination of Uthman was not a passing event.
It marked the rise of armed opposition, emergence of sects (Shi’a, Kharijites), and the weakening of Muslim unity.

The case of Uthman wasn’t just personal it raised deep questions:
Who holds legitimacy?
How should rulers be held accountable?
Where’s the line between obedience and rebellion?

After Uthman’s death, Ali ibn Abi Talib became caliph facing immense pressure:
Demand for justice, political fragmentation, and eventual battles like Jamal and Siffin.

On Friday, 18 Dhu al-Hijjah 35 AH, the rebels broke into his house and assassinated him while he was reading the Qur’an.
His death shocked the Muslim world and ignited the first civil strife.

Despite efforts to mediate, Uthman was besieged in his home for over 40 days denied even water.
He refused to defend himself with violence, saying:
“I will not remove a shirt that Allah has clothed me with.”

In 35 AH, groups from Kufa, Basra, and Egypt marched to Madinah, initially to object to local governors.
But demands escalated quickly, with some calling for Uthman’s removal.
Senior companions like Ali ibn Abi Talib opposed this pressure.

The strongest objections came from Iraq and Egypt. Some accused Uthman of nepotism appointing relatives like Muawiyah in Syria and Abdullah ibn Sa’d in Egypt.
Though his intentions were sincere, the political tensions grew.

Uthman ibn Affan (RA), the third Rightly Guided Caliph, assumed leadership after Umar ibn al-Khattab in 23 AH.
His rule witnessed major expansion, but growing criticism emerged over his appointment of governors mainly his Umayyad relatives.
