I think a lot board gamers underestimate the depth of light games and overestimate the depth of heavy games. More moving parts does not necessarily mean a game has more strategy. It often just means there's more noisiness obscuring the impact of your decisions.

I’ll be at Origins this year with four GMs running @gmtgames.bsky.social events like:
- Baltic Empires
- Plum Island Horror
- Microverse
- Army of the Potomac
- Dominant Species (run by Kai Jensen)!
- Twilight Struggle (play with @jasondcmatthews.bsky.social)!

And more. Hope to see you there!

Baltic Brawl | Baltic Empires: The Northern Wars of 1558-1721 Baltic Empires has interested me for quite a while after it had landed on the P500. The big attraction for me was cutting into a piece of history that is left by the wayside too often. I also have lik...

Might eventually cobble together a blog, depends on how regular I end up doing these!

Happy to facilitate a game in Glasgow sometime, I know a few people who might be up for playing (we have a monthly historical/war boardgames meet-up you'd be welcome to join too, not sure if you're in the chat for that already though).

I've been working on a free, open source (FOSS) virtual tabletop program aimed at designers (using Godot). Over the last few months I've been focusing on component creation.

I'm looking for feedback and collaborators - please consider joining the team!

Basically, players want the complexity of a game to be worth it. They want to be pulled along by the strength of a game's narrative arc as much as by its mechanical arc. This is true across historical and euro games both.

13.02.2026 16:32 β€” πŸ‘ 8    πŸ” 1    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

I'm definitely not saying that effort is always sufficient, just that you might get a lot further than you'd expect with someone who is interested and engaged, even if they're unfamiliar with complex boardgames. On the other hand, if someone isn't interested then there's no point trying to force it.

13.02.2026 20:25 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Sometimes it's just about presenting information better, other times a game can afford to be simpler while still achieving everything the designer wants it to. It can be a tricky balancing act too, as different people can find different presentation styles easier or harder to understand.

13.02.2026 19:55 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

I don't disagree, and I think there are many ways we can make games more accessible (your suggestions and feedback have been very helpful in this regard), but that doesn't necessarily mean we have to make complex games simpler.

13.02.2026 19:55 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 2    πŸ“Œ 0

The thing is that a lot of people don't want to play complex games (or don't want to play games on obscure historical topics), and that's absolutely fine. There are plenty of hobbies and art forms I don't have any interest in either. It's a mistake to try and make everything work for everyone.

13.02.2026 19:31 β€” πŸ‘ 6    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

I'm all in favour of making games clearer and simpler where appropriate, but I totally agree with Cole here – if somebody *wants* to learn how to play a complex game, a lot of the time they'll be able to figure it out, and they might not have been interested if it was more streamlined.

Jokes aside I actually do find philosophy training a real bar to therapy, maybe especially philosophy of science training, because therapists have an unfortunate habit of relying on really bad theories they can't properly explain or justify.

I want to thank people who took the time to read the document and watch the video I shared. It is also important to me that it is understood: I do not believe Matthew, Paula, Monique or Naveen (or anyone else) had involvement (or awareness) of the actions the owner of Game Night Picks took. 1/4
