Imagine winning an Olympic gold medal in men's hockey and then *immediately* destroying every bit of that coolness by partying with a graspy little dork like Kash Patel.

in public, the men's hockey team has been supportive of the women's team, going to games, cheering them on, saying they were inspired by the OT golden goal
must be gutting to feel that support and then get first-hand evidence that behind closed doors, when it's just The Boys, they're laughing at you

Hey cool, the Smithsonian Podcast episode interviewing me about space debris is out! https://www.smithsonianmag.com/podcast/series/theres-more-to-that/season-2/the-astronomical-problem-of-space-junk/
(disclaimer: I have not yet listened to it!)
That's not what these products provide.
Also, she was probably fine with talking about the weather "out there" a few times a year before insisting I must be busy and she should "let me get back to it" (in between birthday and Christmas cards).
Respect the dead. Don't touch this ghoulish tech.
AI products that do a shitty impression of someone’s dead loved one for money are some of the most depraved and sadistic forms of “big tech innovation” that I’ve seen. Like the emotional manipulation and disrespecting the dead IS the product

Council will consider $12,150,000 in transit cuts during next week's budget debate. This is what that will look like.
On the chopping block:
• accessibility training for drivers
• accessibility improvements at stops
• end evening service on Sundays
• cancel 4 planned driver positions

Yeah. We’re wading in a sewer pond. Undergrad students especially, how are they going to tell.

Big loss.
Tomato Red and Winter’s Bone are two of my favourites.
RIP
Just as horrifying: I polled my students a couple years ago and almost all of them admitted to watching the movies I assigned them at 2x the speed!

All of the above.
Thank you for this important thread, Jes.
An issue we're seeing at all levels of university is that many students are simply refusing to do *anything*. They aren't reading the syllabus, aren't following assignment guidelines, aren't engaging with material, ignoring deadlines. And this might seem like old news, but it truly has ramped up.

You can talk about AI--even build AI literacy, if you want to call it that--and still not engage directly with a brutal, unethical, ecologically disastrous bundle of technologies. Regardless of institutional pressure, you can refuse.

LLMs are word generators. They were trained on the writings of humans who describe their own consciousness, so the fact that they mimic (or outright replicate) those writings when told to be more factual isn't strange.
The idea that any of this output is eerie is propaganda.
