Although the course has a clinical orientation, many non-clinicians working in health IT environments have found the course accessible and the knowledge gained invaluable to their professional development.

It also describes and sets the context for newer technologies, such as SMART on FHIR, large language models (LLMs), generative AI, and wearables.

It provides up-to-date details on current events in the field, including electronic health records, data standards and interoperability, clinical decision support, machine learning, population health, patient engagement, and telehealth.

It provides a broad understanding of the field from the vantage point of those who implement, lead, and develop IT solutions for improving health, healthcare, public health, and biomedical research.

The main goal of the course is to provide a detailed overview of biomedical informatics and artificial intelligence (AI) to those who will work at the interface of healthcare and IT. The course also aims to provide an entry point for those wishing further study (or career development) in the field.

Registration is now open for the next offering that begins on January 14, 2026 and runs through May 2026. This course has been running for over 20 years, though is kept up to date with the latest information about the field, and has been completed by over 3400 people.

Also cited was my Journal of Medical Internet Research paper reviewing my 25 years of teaching online, and noticing the scalability of online learning.

One for my paper with @katefu24.bsky.social using 6 LLMs to show they scored better than 75% of students in my introductory biomedical informatics course. (Figure displayed showing correct answers on the final exam, which is not only easily passed but was completed in about 60 seconds by the LLMs.)

It was gratifying to be awarded the @amia.org AMIA Academic Forum Health Informatics Educator of The Year Award at the Annual Symposium, but equally gratifying to be called out twice in Jim Cimino’s Year in Review session at the meeting.

This year marks my 40th consecutive #AMIA2025 fall meeting, dating back to SCAMC, and including the virtual meeting during the pandemic in 2020. Extra special this year is my daughter Alyssa attending, along with my grandson, and we will all be decked out in AMIA t-shirts!

Data scientists perform last rites for 'dearly departed datasets' in 2nd Trump administration A group of U.S. data scientists has published a list of federal datasets that have been altered or removed since President Donald Trump returned to the White House.

There are many worse things the Trump Administration has done but this one hits close to home for me. One of the things that the US government does very well is create high-quality data sets and tools to use them. It is sad to lose these tremendous resources.
