My favorite example is the fat-hating doctor who was heavier than me and suggested I “eat a slice of whole grain bread once in a while and maybe take a walk.” At the time, I was walking nearly every day and I hadn’t had white bread in a year.

What’s worse is when I tell them I already do all the things they think will save me, they usually say, “oh, good! Keep doing that,” and don’t make any effort to figure out why their magic bullets aren’t working.

If doctors went into each patient visit w a completely open mind, it would do a lot for improving the US healthcare industry. I cannot tell you how many doctors have diagnosed and prescribed based on their assumptions, only to find out I already do all the things they think will save me.
