The regime is acting this way because there are no consequences so it is clear that consequences—the development of them, the advocacy for them, the imposition on bad behavior—are the answer to our crisis.

Don’t worry, once we’ve helped them come for immigrants and trans people, they’re sure to be appeased and dedicated to solidarity in our great big tent and not come after anyone else, as history teaches

There is no compromise policy Democrats can offer Republicans to make them act normal on this issue. We simply have to state the basic reality — immigrants contribute to our country in myriad ways — and fight for it. I don't know how so many journalists convinced themselves this isn't an option.

Substantively, you can certainly have land use reform without rent regulation, or vice versa. But politically, I think they have to work together as two sides of a program of challenging the power of big landowners on behalf of tenants (and aspiring homeowners.)

The homeless are painful to look at because they remind us of how unfair our world is, of how much suffering it contains, of how arbitrary and undeserved and precarious our own comforts and health are, of how we have failed to be sufficiently generous and merciful to others.

put street trees everywhere you can in a neighborhood, make curb cuts so that their roots can absorb storm water from the street, grow native plants around their base, check back in five years and count how many welfare and health measures have improved

“…this is a part of a larger push from corporate landlords who have lobbied the Trump administration to reduce eviction protections for tenants. ‘Housing providers right now are looking for ways to speed up the eviction process to make it easier to get tenants out,’ she said.”

Proposed HUD Cuts Are Already Freezing Affordable Housing Projects Proposed $27B HUD cuts are already freezing affordable housing projects nationwide. Lenders are pulling back, developers are delaying builds, and $50B in multifamily loans could be at risk—long before...

“The cuts would jeopardize the financial viability of projects that rely on rental subsidies for operating revenue. Developers warn that this threatens to destabilize the broader housing finance system.”

Penn Plaza eviction notices, 10 years ago, energized Pittsburgh’s affordable housing debate Evictions driven by gentrification at East Liberty’s Penn Plaza changed the narrative of Pittsburgh displacement and alerted many to the affordable housing crisis.

This evening affordable housing advocates rallied in East Liberty on the 10th anniversary of the notices to Penn Plaza residents that eventually scattered them to make way for Whole Foods, offices and parking. @stephstrasburg.bsky.social was there www.publicsource.org/pittsburgh-p...

Possibly this is a Northeast-specific perspective, but in my experience you never see the main opposition to upzoning and land use reform coming from affordable-housing advocates. It’s always from people who just like cars and parking lots!
