Stance on Science is a nonpartisan initiative meant to inform the voting community about political candidatesβ positions regarding science policy-relevant issues, and also shows how science policies can affect our communities!

I wish I could fund my own research. I wish that we didnβt have to worry about money.
But we do - and itβs our governmentβs obligation to us, the people, to fund basic science.
A 3D-styled pie chart illustrating the distribution of Research and Development (R&D) resources based on the NSF NCSES National Patterns of R&D Resources: 2022-23 Update. The chart is divided into six segments, listed here in descending order of their financial contribution: Federal Govt: The largest segment, shown in dark blue, accounts for 51% of the total, valued at $39.5 B. Higher Ed. β Institutional: A light coral segment accounting for 23%, valued at $18.2 B. Non-profit at Research Institutes: A dark red segment accounting for 8%, valued at $6.1 B. Higher Ed. β Direct Philanthropy: A bright red segment accounting for 7%, valued at $5.8 B. Business: A grey segment accounting for 7%, valued at $5.2 B. Non-Federal Govt: The smallest segment, shown in light blue, accounting for 4%, valued at $3.2 B.
Here's a chart showing who funds basic research in the US. It's easy to tell that private funding cannot make up for significant cuts to government funding.

Recently heard an NSF employee say βwe want your proposals, we are fundingβ, yet they refused to acknowledge how many NSF apps went without review or how only AI and quantum stuff was funded this cycle.
Extraordinarily tone deaf.

Decades of evidence show that immigrants make disproportionate contributions to scientific discovery and technological advancement. As of 2019, nearly one in four STEM workers in the United States was foreign-born.
Scientists cannot afford to treat this as someone elseβs issue.
I canβt say it better than @disha-patel3.bsky.social already did. The opportunity to meet 40+ SNAPpers at #AAASmtg and then reflect on a year of @snapcoalition.bsky.social? Priceless!

Inspired and amazed by the interesting and thought-provoking sessions at the AAAS Annual Meeting, the 40+ members of the @snapcoalition.bsky.social I had the honor to meet in person (finally!), and the ideas and conversations that took place.
Jordan and I hope you enjoy this AAAS reflection!
You three were amazing! So glad I could attend!

Science + Art appreciators, we need your help!
We're working with the E. Kensington Neighbors Assn & H.A Brown school to create a community-driven mural on the biodiversity of our Philly neighborhood!
We need your help to fund this project

16.02.2026 16:05 β π 25 π 2 π¬ 1 π 0Communication, and scicomm more broadly, is also a field of study where scholars examine how scientific knowledge and understanding moves between experts, policymakers, media, and various public audiences. (This is a gross oversimplification)
16.02.2026 16:05 β π 22 π 2 π¬ 1 π 0Communicators also need significant subject matter expertise. Simplifying complex concepts is hard, especially if you donβt understand them well. As Einstein said βIf you can't explain it simply, you don't understand it well enough.β Itβs also easy to introduce damaging misconceptions.
16.02.2026 16:05 β π 34 π 4 π¬ 1 π 0Science communication is a skill that can be learned and improves with practice. To effectively communicate you need to be able to translate complex information into clear language, understand different audiences and adapt messaging appropriately, use storytelling, and more.
16.02.2026 16:05 β π 36 π 4 π¬ 1 π 0Clear communication builds trust, reduces misinformation, and supports evidence-based policy. It also strengthens scientific literacy, encourages critical thinking, and can inspire future scientists.

This seems like a great moment to talk about the importance of science communication!
Science communication matters because it connects scientific research with people, giving folks information they need to make informed decisions about everything from health to hazards.
OPINION: Pathways for future scientists are becoming scarce, threatening a strong and innovativeΒ workforce
When I was 17, I didnβt know a single scientist. I did not grow up around labs, research universities or people who talked about things like βSTEM pathways.β The only reason I am a scientistβ¦
