In March, we had the honor of welcoming five incredibly talented Plymouth-Canton students to the Michigan State Capitol! Sarah Moore and Dana Sassine were named winners of the New York Times’ (@nytimes ) 100-Word Narrative Contest, and Madeline Lenk, Patrick Ward, and Ye Won Paek were recognized as finalists — all from Ms. Olivia C. Foster’s 21st Century Global Issues & Literature courses at PCEP (@pccs_official ) Chosen out of more than 12,000 global submissions, these young writers achieved something truly extraordinary. I was proud to present each student and Ms. Foster with a special State of Michigan Tribute, announce them as my guests on the House floor, and give them a tour of our state’s historic Capitol building. Gun violence is the leading cause of death for kids in America. That’s why we passed Red Flag laws and safe storage in Michigan. Now, Republicans want to roll them back.
We’re not going backward. We’re fighting for the right to live.
Progress isn’t permanent unless we defend it. Today I stood alongside survivors, students, parents, and advocates to say: enough is enough. Gun violence is the leading cause of death for children in America. That should shake us all. Let me be clear: you can’t say you care about families while repealing the laws that keep them alive. We will fight. We will vote. We will keep showing up. And we will win.
