Guitarists: Help me out here. Preparing to play one particular number yesterday, Chris Wood removed a length of hairy string he had draped loosely over his guitar's tuning pegs and fixed it carefully to the body of the instrument instead. He played the song (never touching the hairy string) then...

... removed it again and draped it back over his tuning pegs. That was the only song he used it for in the whole set and, as far as I can see, it served no purpose whatsoever. Can anyone explain?

The headliners (and organisers of the whole day) were Magpie Arc, a modern folk-rock supergroup comprising Sam Carter, Tom Wright, Findlay Napier, Alex Hunter & Nancy Kerr. My only beef with this lot is that they spread themselves out so widely on stage it's impossible to get them all in one photo!

The big names on the bill were Steeleye Span's Maddy Prior and Peter Knight, playing tonight as a duo. Prior gave us a wonderfully witchy and sinister performance of Bedlam Boys, a song I'd never heard before but will definitely investigate further.

Break for some grub, then back for the evening sessions, which began with the excellent Chris Wood. A great songwriter with an enjoyably sarky persona on stage. None The Wiser was my favourite song from his set tonight.

This year's interview slot had Folk on Foot's Matthew Bannister questioning Simon Nicol, a founder member of Fairport Convention. Things took a melancholy turn here as Nicol recalled the 1969 motorway crash which killed Fairport's original drummer.

Next up were Lisa Knapp & Gerry Divers. I've never heard quite such thunderous end-of-days fiddle sound as Divers manages to achieve. Another CD for my "must buy" list.

Had a great day yesterday at Cecil Sharp House's Indoor Festival of Folk. Ellie Gowers kicked the day off nicely.
