David Baltimore, Nobel Prize-winning scientist and former Caltech president, dies at 87
Baltimore played a role in virtually every important national debate over the use and potential misuse of the science of genetic engineering.
www.latimes.com/obituaries/s... RIP David Baltimore. A true giant of biomedical research. Made so many fundamental discoveries: Reverse transcriptase; NF-kB; Rag genes (among others) Also shut down his lab for a week in 1970 to protest the US invasion of Cambodia.

I applaud workers at the CDC for standing up against Sec. Kennedy’s dangerous anti-vaccine crusade.
We are witnessing a full-blown war on public health from the Trump Administration.
History will not look kindly on those who stayed silent in the face of this assault on science.

Funding Policy - Research Grants
NCI funding policy for research project grant (RPG) awards reflects the funding goals of the institute, NIH, and HHS.
Many of us have long been worried about the harm of the 50% multiyear funding (MYF) requirement.
When NCI published their payline at 4% AND cited MYF as the cause, I thought: “Someone in NCI is a hero. They took a huge risk to make the community aware.”

Columbia University’s agreement with the Trump administration is a disaster for academic freedom, freedom of speech, & the independence of American higher education. Never in the history of our nation has an educational institution so thoroughly bent to the will of an autocrat.

How Trump’s D.E.I. Cuts Are Hurting Rural White Americans Too
“If you cut out these diversity measures, you're going to make science full of people that are very elite…Full of people who have grown up with a large amount of privilege, who were able to work in a lab in high school because their dad was a prof at Cornell.” 🧪

A word cloud made from flagged terms in terminated NIH grant proposals. The most prominent words in large font include “trans,” “diverse,” “diversity,” “minority,” “sex,” “expression,” “mental health,” “gender,” and “women.” Other visible terms include “LGBTQ,” “racial,” “underrepresented,” “disability,” “barriers,” “black,” “equity,” “health equity,” “vaccine,” “bias,” and “intersectionality.” The word cloud highlights terms related to identity, inclusion, and marginalized communities.
HAPPY PRIDE 🏳️🌈
Under Trump, research using terms like “Trans,” “LGBTQ,” & “Gender identity” is being defunded. These terms reflect real people who deserve science that includes them.
Stand with us to protect LGBTQ+ science from political erasure.

If your NSF or NIH grant was terminated--whether at Harvard or elsewhere--please report it here.

Host a teach in. Share science with your community....protest style! Calling back to the teach ins of 1965, we are taking to parks, pubs, & churches to tell our neighborhoods about how the budget cuts will impact them.
Our goal is to have 1000 SUFS Teach Ins across the US, by 9/30.
*GASP* 😮
We know, it's a big goal.
If you've received tax dollars for your science, you have a responsibility to inform *your* community what is at stake: public health, the economy, innovation, and America's global leadership.
