The situation I describe isn't about being frugal or cooking at home. I was with friends, and it just wasn't the right time to opine about how I could have saved money. If I was doing it regularly, that would have been different -- it would have been prudent.

There are a few times in my life where I remember being cheap (e.g. opining that a bar was expensive because nachos were $24 and I could make an entire tray for less. I even called this index my "Nacho Prince Index" -- it is literally how I kept track if inflation)
