Sir James Munby The sense of shock amongst lawyers and others concerned with the rights of children and those with impaired decision-making capacity at the announcement of the sudden death on New Year's Day of Sir James Munby is palpable.  I share it.  I was, the morning I learned of it, writing a book chapter directly inspired by a lecture that he gave, and could hear him with particular vividness (it was an unusual ability to be able to both boom and twinkle at the same time, something he had a particular habit of doing when catching my eye and telling me that I was flat wrong about something about which we both had strongly held but different views).

Chart showing the proportion of social care providers reporting the main cause of staff leaving (left) and main difficult finding new staff (right): England, 2024

When social care providers were asked what
the main cause of staff leaving was (the left-hand panel ), over one-third (35 per cent) responded better pay outside of care. Similarly, when care providers were asked
about the main difficulty finding new staff, roughly three-in-ten (28 per cent) responded
better pay offers outside care (the right-hand panel).

What is contributing to the staffing crisis in adult social care? Social care providers say the main cause is better pay elsewhere.

They link teams, coordinate services and advocate for individuals. This project will explore how these roles are developing within integrated health and care systems." There is a photo of an older man talking to a healthcare professional.

Unofficial update to MCA Codes updated There are two Codes of Practice to the Mental Capacity Act 2005, one for the main body of the Act, and one for the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards. They are statutory Codes: they have been approved by Parliament, and the MCA 2005 requires certain people to have regard to them. Those people include anyone acting in a professional capacity. Neither Code of Practice has ever been updated since they were published, the main Code in 2007, and the DoLS Code in 2009.
