tbh i think most of this came from "let's copy twitter but make it even better" but forgot that the result of mixing said features all together was the equivalent of mixing ammonia and bleach

i think there should be a function to block DM's or discourage replies from stalkers / harassers, or at least some policy to moderate it.

it does everything wrong. it breaks the site for those who are blocked thus encouraging them to switch to another account where they're free to harass you more.

additionally with lists being public someone can add *you* to a blocklist and break the site for you as revenge.

I also think while we're at it, public lists should require permission from both parties to be added.

That's just common sense and Bluesky needs to add it yesterday.

My proposal would be the block function is reworked to serve the purpose of "you cannot message me" and mute exists for "I don't want to see your stupid takes, bluecoyote."

That's it. No obfuscation, no breaking threads - or the timeline, and no fake sense of security on a public federated network

Y'all might not remember, but it was just a few years ago that Twitter crusaders would use blocklists for witch hunts, and you'd be added to an "confirmed abuser" list for ironically saying #cactuscrew .

Fourth, because Bluesky technically makes blocks - and lists - public, it's extremely easy to use both for harassment campaigns. But there's very little ability to manage either without a third party app (Clearsky, for example.)

This behavior isn't clear either, and I've seen it firsthand: if you were to post a quiz on what posts get deleted with a block most Bluesky users would fail it.

Bluesky takes it a step further and also takes top level thread replies with blocks, which is stupid and seems dangerous.

Eventually someone's going to use it to intentionally break someone else's thread and use it to change the context of what someone else is saying.

The site's current block setup doesn't actually prevent you from seeing what an individual who blocked you said, it just adds in a couple unnecessary steps to create a fake sense of privacy.

This accomplished nothing on Twitter (aside from creating block = "my bitch" culture.)

Now fourth, you should have the right to see what anyone on this site is *publicly* saying - on your own terms. There should be no half measures regarding this.

Twitter got this right in one of the rare instance of Elon Musk making a good decision.

Third, you should have the right to restrict your audience- not everything needs to be fully in the public sphere.

Second off, targeted harassment, spamming, and ToS violations shouldn't be tolerated.
