Yeah that's the thing! It looks like people are still just using this with a serial to USB adapter. Here's some info on using one I've found -

Trying to find if anyone's made an updated USB device that's similar, but it looks like your next best bet would to just get an Everdrive to run ROMs with edited saves.

They only run about $20 on eBay, but it looks like your computer would need an old serial port to use one!

Skullboy and his crew go on a prank and vandalism spree on Christmas Eve as three elves sing about it.
Skullboy smashes open a mailbox, sees a kid's letter to Santa, and realizes he's ruining Christmas for others.
Skullboy and the Units repair all the damage and return home to find a present from Santa. It is, of course, a lump of coal.

Skullboy is overjoyed to find everything on his list under the Christmas tree, including his original list. He realizes that the Units did all this and takes them to breakfast. Before he leaves, he discovers that Santa did leave him something - a lump of coal.
