The akugyo (悪魚) has the head and arms of a woman and breathes fire, a malevolent Japanese mermaid who ensnares the ships of sailors in rocks and then breaks the ship, devouring them. Japanese lords have tried to take her down, and failed. #WyrdWednesday

Part of an old map showing approximately the valley of the Ebwy Fawr river (to the west of the mountain) where Mr Harry had his startling experience. Notice that Ebbw Vale - at the top of the map - was in those days simply 'Ebwy Vale Furnace'. The map is reproduced on the dust jacket of the facsimile reprint of 'Apparitions Of Spirits' by Edmund Jones (1813) where the story can be found.

One night a Mr Harry was making his way down the valley of the Ebwy Fawr, South #Wales, when a spectral fire leapt up in his path. He tried to dodge past it but a huge Hell Hound appeared on the other side, growling at him. He had no choice but to turn around and trudge back up again.

In a story from Herman Hofberg's 'Swedish Fairy Tales,' a ship's crew was skeptical of the package that a giant named Puke had given them to deliver to the church in Lofta and instead threw it overboard onto a nearby island, which immediately burst into flames. #WyrdWednesday

In #JapaneseFolklore there is a giant crab #yokai known as kanibozu. These creatures take on the form of priests and move into empty temples. If a new priest arrives to lead the temple the kanibozu demands they answer a riddle & if they can't solve it, they get eaten.

A Flemish tale says a man felt something very heavy crawling on his shoulders while he was at a graveyard. He was accompanied by a rat-like ghost creature that became as large as a horse. It disappeared into a stream.

One of the weirdest examples of poltergeist behaviour occurred during the classic case from Tidworth, #Wiltshire, in 1662-3 An unfortunate horse was found in a stable grotesquely contorted, with one of its rear hooves stuck in its mouth. It otherwise unharmed.
