if you had asked me to predict what the plaintiff's attorney would say in a statement this would have been nowhere in my top 10 or 20 guesses tbh

Incredible.
19 of the 137 Venezuelans whom Trump sent to CECOT under the Alien Enemies Act, & who were swapped back to VZ & then escaped to 3d countries, seek to come back to the US to contest their Tren de Aragua designationβ€”knowing they'll be detained (& God knows what else) by the Trump Admin.

Last yr, when oversight officials visited 1 prison they found all housing units well staffed – tho lawmakers said that was a β€œtrick” accomplished by using extreme augmentation and that the bureau tried to mislead oversight officials abtwhat they’d done democrats-judiciary.house.gov/sites/evo-su...

One way the agency has tried to skirt the problem is by forcing prison nurses, teachers and plumbers to step in and work as corrections officers, an unpopular practice known as β€œaugmentation.”

Last year, BOP staff worked more hours of augmentation than in any other year in the past decade.

That decrease in staffing actually makes life worse for both staff and prisoners. With mandatory OT, staff are sometimes working 4 doubles a week, and prisoners are getting locked down more and have less access to programming.

NEW: The federal prison staffing shortage, exacerbated by corrections officers fleeing to ICE jobs, has contributed to more lockdowns, more violence and less access to recidivism-reducing programs, the lawmakers noted in their letter to the BOP director.
