Honestly what compromising material do the remastering people have on the commissioning departments at streaming companies to keep getting work on pointless, pointless remasters?

That's such a part of the trope, isn't it? That the longer it's in this cycle, the greater its chances. Not at all! Ultimately it all boils down to what the person at the very top decides, and how many dozens of weeks it takes for your project to reach them.

Also fml why is everyone banging on at him to chase his cock-end instead of making the perfectly rational decision to marry Edwina? Who is delightful. Anthony bro they all did you dirty.

I think Jonathan Bailey also does 'barely withheld emotional crisis' so well that Anthony Bridgerton becomes more visually sympathetic than the text perhaps expects him to? But anyway... fun watch.

But that's such a modern lens isn't it. You see a sad man and you see what made him sad and what you want is for him to reckon with the trauma and heal from it. You don't want him berated for being such a fucking hard-arse. Anyway, quite a weird experience. Scrooge is not a 21C story.

At the end it's Anthony Bridgerton doing all the lesson-learning and it made me feel quite sad for him. In another show, he goes into his office, has a brandy and puts a pistol to his head. That's a guy in crisis, and everyone is just on at him the whole time 😂.

It's a Victorian trope: sad man hardened by trauma must account for his crimes, buck up his ideas and become kind. But through a modern lens, you don't really feel he has anything to account for at all. He needs therapy! But he gets such a hard time.

Reporting from 2021: I have finished Bridgerton S2. A chaste affair compared to S1. Shall I blame Gen Z?

You could write a book on the effects of an 'Eberneezer Scrooge' narrative model through the 21c lens, but who has time? In short, I thought the show was fairly unfair on Anthony! Poor lad.

But it always reminds me of being in writersrooms when the showrunner has vanished to get stuck into casting or meetings that they're not *that* necessary in but decisions can be made quickly and it feels more satisfying. The crisis that needs you is in the writersroom, my bro. Get back to work. 😂

You also hear a lot more from commissioners how their time has been sucked into working 'on productions' or 'being on set' which always makes me scratch my head *just* a little. Are so many shows in total crisis? Or are commissioners getting more hands-on than they need to be? I don't know.

02.12.2025 09:28 — 👍 3    🔁 0    💬 2    📌 0

A lot of commissioners aren't happy either, by the way. I try to avoid the 'them/us' enemy class discourse these days. But I do think the process has become interminable for many reasons. Labyrinthine hierarchies, decision paralysis, reduced slots.

It's left this odd atmosphere where for the first time I can remember I have MORE sympathy with producers than I do with myself, because I can take on as much as I can manage and ultimately only have to pay for me. Having staff...office costs...bank loans...? I'd fucking die. Christ.

It always ends up being a war between those on safe, full time salaries for whom doing nothing is the safest options and freelancers or producers with bank loans, staff costs and fewer long-term productions paying the way for whom speedy decisions are a must.

Haha yeah I actually had something at a company recently where the person working on it left and no one said anything. That felt quite extraordinary though.

Like with any industry crunch, it leaves sellers short and nervous, full of urgency and drive, and buyers paralysed, worried about finances and their American bosses. It's low stakes for buyers to slow down. When the sellers are most desperate for them to speed up. So it's tense right now.

I'm talking about paid development with streamers/broadcasters. It would be pretty shocking and notable if you never heard back on something they'd spent a lot of money on :S

02.12.2025 09:12 — 👍 2    🔁 0    💬 1    📌 0

This must be so difficult for producers too, who I've personally noticed seem to be getting faster and faster at turning round notes, because I think they're as in urgent and tenuous a place as creators. But when it goes back to the buyer, it all grinds to a halt.

02.12.2025 09:11 — 👍 11    🔁 1    💬 1    📌 0

By the time a show is getting made or killed, you might have spent 2 years on it, but in total you've only spent about 4 weeks actually at your desk working. The rest... waiting.

Not fit for purpose: UK commissioning process under fire Production sector leaders are demanding radical changes to a system they describe as 'medieval'

When you try to explain why scripted development can take so long, it's almost embarrassing to have to tell people that it does not boil down to some very specific, rigorous process, but rather that it might take you 5 days to write a draft, and seventeen weeks to get each set of notes back on it.

If you're not drunk, and have a driver's license, I'd always tell people to replace their uber trip with a zipcar ride. So much cheaper.

02.12.2025 08:53 — 👍 1    🔁 0    💬 0    📌 0

I'm gutted about this. Zipcar really filled a gap for me left by the collapse of Uber/Bolt, particularly in high-crowd events like after football games or gigs, or when the weather is bad, or when there's a tube strike.

Listening to David Lammy on @BBCr4today attempting to justify abolishing trial by jury, it is increasingly and terrifyingly clear that he simply does not understand the issues.

Why Zipcar gave up on London The car-sharing scheme was hit by rapidly increased costs, a new congestion charge, and a lack of support from councils.

Among other issues with Zipcar's model in London: Having to negotiate individually with 32 boroughs, some of which charged thousands of pounds per car. Meanwhile, Croydon council outsourced much of their employee car fleet to Zipcar and may be a bit screwed. www.londoncentric.media/p/zipcar-lon...

Kinda fascinated by the idea of a party-based RPG that makes you pick between friends and values. Lots of RPGs have had paths where a party member can leave, but it's usually treated like a failure state and pretty hard to do. I want to actually make you pay a price for prioritizing people-pleasing.

Coming to Bridgerton like…6 years late, it is totally mad how chaste s2 is compared to s1. They went from raunchy to YA yearning romantasy right quick. Was that a Gen Z thing?
