Wine Fortunes โ€“ Tim Atkin โ€“ Master of Wine

Why is it so difficult to make money in the wine business, even for people that succeeded in other fields? My two cents in my latest for @timatkinmw.bsky.social .

I am proud to publish Christy Canterbury MWโ€™s fourth Burgundy Special Report. At 214 pages, itโ€™s her most comprehensive overview. Over the space of a month, Christy tasted 2,225 wines from the โ€œimmediately appealingโ€ 2023 vintage, making her report essential reading.

The wine trade is facing a number of challenges right now, not least from neo-Prohibitionists. But it has dealt with crises in the past, argues Andy Neather, and has proved itself to be both creative and adaptable. There are reasons for optimism. timatkin.com/reasons-to-b...

Reasons To Be Cheerful โ€“ Tim Atkin โ€“ Master of Wine

My latest column for @timatkinmw.bsky.social: in a Dry January with plenty of bad news for the wine industry (neo-prohibitionists running amok etc), there are still good reasons to be cheerful: wine retains its innate ability to surprise and delight timatkin.com/reasons-to-b...

End charity tax breaks for dark money donations | Good Law Project Charities get generous tax breaks โ€“ even for anonymous donations. But shouldnโ€™t we know who theyโ€™re working for?

Seems to me as though, as a quid pro quo for wealthy donors getting a public subsidy for their donations, they should declare who they are. No transparency - no subsidy. goodlawproject.org/end-charity-...

And what is your take? To publish meaningless marketing pyramids? Who does that connect with?

23.12.2024 22:40 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 2    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

I donโ€™t think weโ€™re keeping anything โ€œelitistโ€, whatever that means. Weโ€™ve moved a long way from my original premise. Wine is complex if you want it to be, but also very simple. Itโ€™s not an either/or. Itโ€™s both. Career suicide? Donโ€™t make me laugh.

23.12.2024 22:38 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 2    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

True enough. Wine writers - including things like Food and Drink - had a much greater influence 20 years ago. They still help to โ€œlegitimiseโ€ certain wine styles. Australia wouldnโ€™t have happened in the way it did without wine writers. And โ€œinterested consumersโ€ help to drive change and innovation.

23.12.2024 04:25 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 6    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 2    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Thatโ€™s not what I meant. Wine writers influence consumer behaviour and the prices people are willing to pay. Itโ€™s not the only factor, but to argue that the market is โ€œautonomousโ€ is absurd. We can influence what people buy to a degree.

22.12.2024 23:42 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 2    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 2    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Fine. But itโ€™s not gospel. What does he know about the wine business? As you know, itโ€™s complicated and market and even segment-specific.
