Just read @saranahmed.bsky.socialโ€™s energising new book on complaining as a collective task of feminist and queer world (un)building. Get a copy!

People from all walks of life โ€” including many British Jews โ€” are protesting against your governmentโ€™s complicity in genocide and standing in solidarity with Palestine.

Conflating Israelโ€™s genocide in Gaza with British Jews is deeply inappropriate and dangerous. Shame on you.

What Happened to the Universityโ€™s Commitment to Free Expression? "Why would it bow to antidemocratic pressures by placing a professor on leave without their request, consent, or involvement? That any university would do this is beyond comprehension and is cause for alarm about the future of academic freedom in Canada."

In Kent, Reformโ€™s talk of protecting women is a dangerous illusion | Good Law Project Dodgy stats and questionable allies. Itโ€™s time to push back against Reformโ€™s dangerous agenda on womenโ€™s safety, says Sara Fox.

"Most violence happens in the home, not on the streets. [We had] a strategy to address it around four pillars: prevention, engagement, the victimโ€™s journey, and rehabilitation.

That serious, practical work has now been pushed aside in favour of fearmongering and scapegoating." goodlaw.social/hudg

A committee member, who reviewed the transcript of the exchange between Cheyfitz and Renard and spoke on the condition of anonymity because the proceedings are confidential, said Cheyfitz had brought up Renardโ€™s views in a way that was โ€œambiguousโ€ and โ€œnot particularly coherent.โ€ The committee member said โ€œthere wasnโ€™t clear evidenceโ€ of discrimination because it was not apparent whether Cheyfitz had intended to comment on Renardโ€™s pro-Israel opinions or his identity as an Israeli.

At Cornell, the Dean broke policy and ignored the disciplinary committee's findings that there wasn't evidence of discrimination, and forwarded the complaint to the Provost anyway. The Provost then opened an investigation.

Early last semester, Droubi said, students began approaching Cheyfitz with complaints that a graduate student in the โ€œGaza, Indigeneity, Resistanceโ€ class appeared to be recording them, possibly to โ€œgather their names and commentsโ€ and intimidate them. โ€œWe believe that a student came to the course for the sole reason of surveilling and potentially harming students in the class,โ€ Droubi said. โ€œThat ended up proving itself to be true because multiple students came forward and shared their concerns with Professor Cheyfitz.โ€ Cheyfitz said one Palestinian student quit the class after telling him she felt upset and frightened.

According to Cheyfitz, the graduate student often steered conversations away from the assigned readingsโ€”which at that point mostly focused on definitions of genocide and international law on Indigenous rightsโ€”to defend Israelโ€™s conduct in the war in Gaza and argue with others in the class. โ€œHe clearly had not done the readings,โ€ Cheyfitz said. โ€œIt was disruptive.โ€

Cheyfitz said he met with the graduate student in late January and spoke to him about concerns from his classmates. During the conversation, he asked the graduate student to drop the course, and by the next class, he did, Cheyfitz said. The graduate student, Oren Renard, a PhD candidate in computer science whose identity was confirmed by other students in the class, previously served in Israelโ€™s elite military surveillance agency, Unit 8200, according to his LinkedIn profile.

Cornell is cancelling a distinguished professor's classes on Gaza and suspending him because of the complaints of a student who previously served in Israel's military surveillance agency and was literally recording the comments of other students in class and deliberately derailing discussion.

The Quakers issued this reply to a GC attack on their trans inclusion policy.

Itโ€™s incredible in its care and certainty. Its examples of transphobia are spot on. And >98% of Quakers surveyed agree with the policy.

Anyone implementing trans inclusion policies should take note. This is how to do it.
