Oprah praises Australia's under-16s social media ban;

05.12.2025 05:15 β π 47 π 6 π¬ 6 π 4this isn't the full story (spoiler: parents won't be forever banned if kids use their accounts).
the guidelines to social media platforms is that they need to let people appeal age ban decisions.
IF a platform suspends a account b/c a kid is using it, a parent can always appeal & overturn the ban.
TikTok is next up announcing how its going to comply with the teen social media ban.
What's different with them: on top of facial/ID, users can verify their age using a credit card and they can also appeal a wrong decision by getting a parent to vouch for their age.
I wen through a phase of being obsessed by Scientology and had to make the same caveat

04.12.2025 22:05 β π 12 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0a very funny thing about writing a book about conspiracy theories is that when you tell people about, you often get a look, so i've started adding "it's not pro-conspiracy theory"

I am hearing from multiple sources that the EU Commission is announcing its first DSA fine tomorrow against X on ad transparency, blue check & dark pattern, and researcher access to data.
The fine is in the "100s of millions of Euros."

so i've reported a few stories recently that have been ripped off by others without credit. it sucks but that's life i guess
but this is a new level: 7NEWS literally ripped an image from my article (a screenshot that i took on my own phone!) and used it to rewrite my article... with no credit
i wrote today that the most extreme predictions of failure of the ban won't happen, so i find it bizarre to suggest that companies are sabotaging this when it seems like they're just trying to avoid a $50m fine

in the past week, 2 public figures behind the teen social media ban have pre-emptively accused tech platforms of sabotaging the ban.
it's somewhat at odds with the government's own research and esafety's regulatory guidance which both say age check tech has flaws.
