NPR and PBS are vital American institutions and critical to the survival of American democracy. Our country relies on them. I believe the channels and stations in big cities will remain solvent, but every town needs this service.

Restore funding for public media.

It is critical for American democracy that people continue to have access to local news. We need to know what is happening in our towns and cities. We need independent journalists who are paid and can continue a record of everything that has happened for the long term.

PBS and NPR provide daily local news coverage to every community in the United States. They employee thousands of journalists who report on issues that otherwise would likely go unreported. As local newspapers are bought out by national corporations, PBS and NPR members remain independent.

This is particularly poignant because John Oliver, with all due respect, and a lot is due, is a highly paid journalist from a massive private network. He is in a way in competition with PBS Newshour, and it is so good to see him defending other journalists.

Also, just like with most good things, delve into the history of a good American institution, and you find LBJ, per usual.
