American Spikenard plant
American Spikenard, aralia racemosa, is native to nearly all of New England. It has panicles of purple-red berries over a foot long. Large like a bush, but it dies back to the ground over winter.
Wampanoag and Abenaki people would crush the roots and apply to the skin to treat sore throats.
