The Haida Gwaii region is one of Canada's seismic hotspots. During 2025, 1248 #earthquakes (M0.7-4.8) were located here (few were felt). Note that several M7-8 earthquakes have occurred here during the past 100 years.

Flooded back road on QC main where a landslide has come down. There are several points on the forestry service road that are impassable due to flood waters.

And the north end hospital is on diversion at night from 3pm until 8am the next morning.

Serious situation on Haida Gwaii - the north end of the island is completely cut off from the south end. The hwy is washed out at jungle beach, sections of pavement gone. The Yakoun River is flooded + the back road is impassable at several points. No way to get to ferry, no freight delivery

Hwy 16 on Haida Gwaii has been closed due to a washout from extensive flooding at Jungle Beach. They are waiting until first light tomorrow to assess the damage.

Yes - 13 years ago tonight, the M7.8 #HaidaGwaii earthquake generated the world's largest #tsunami of 2012. Runup to 13m in some inlets left seaweed in trees and fish in the forest. If you are near water and feel long and strong shaking, go to high ground.
