January is nearly over, and before we well and truly jump into 2026, hereβs a moment to celebrate everything that made the last one count π
The 2025 SONICOM Year in Review is now live π tinyurl.com/kmv6j5ze
A few years ago, we had the pleasure of showcasing some of the remarkable women driving innovation within the SONICOM consortium π
Today, we're excited to relaunch that series and introduce a new face on the team!

Last week, the University of Malaga team presented on the recently released v2.0 of the Binaural Rendering Toolbox (BRT) at Forum Acusticum Euronoise 2025!
Some of the team worked on a piece about the toolbox for the SONICOM website. Check it out π bit.ly/45LzYsZ
Congratulations to Arcadio Reyes-Lecuona on presenting the first (of many) SONICOM presentations at Forum Acusticum 2025 π
Stay tuned!
Let us also introduce you to Dr Katarina Poole π bit.ly/45BKSBA
Dr Poole works as a Research Associate at the Audio Experience Design team in Imperial College London, UK
We will be sharing more profiles of the women in SONICOM in the near future, so keep your eye out!
Next up, meet PhD student, Kathi Pollack π bit.ly/4k8VY4t
Kathi works at the Acoustics Research Institute within the Austrian Academy of Sciences in Vienna, Austria
Happy International Women in Engineering Day!

The SONICOM consortium met in Milan, Italy for a jam-packed annual meeting π
Things unofficially kicked off Tuesday evening with a relaxed aperitivo, the perfect warm-up for the following 2.5 days of sharing key updates from the past 12 months and mapping out plans for the final year of SONICOM!
Our postdoc Katarina Poole also presented her work on synthetic @sonicom.bsky.social HRTFs at ISH 2025!

The analysis shows that BezierPPM can accurately represent human pinnae, meaning that it has high potential for a range of applications, including:
πͺͺ Biometric identification
π Design of ear prostheses
π Personalisation of spatial hearing
βIn contrast to other PPMs, BezierPPM is inspired by the biological structure of the human pinna aiming at providing parameters directly related to the complex pinna geometry,β says Felix Perfler, PhD student and first author of the research.
