Thank you for highlighting this fact. UPMC needs to stand boldly on the side of trans youth and trans people in our state. Governor Shapiro offered support to UPMC on several occasions and UPMC never responded to these efforts. Reinstate Gender Affirming Care Now!

While I am glad that UPMC has yet to hand over any records, UPMC continues to refuse to take bold action to protect trans kids. "Crucially, UPMC’s brief does not oppose the subpoena itself, but instead takes a neutral stance, calling for “clarity” from the court on its obligations."

Federal Court Protects Trans Youth Records at Childrens Philly But UPMC Families Still Waiting Trans youth and their families in Pennsylvania saw a significant legal victory on Friday, just not the one many in Pittsburgh had been hoping for. On Friday, a federal court in Philadelphia quashed a sweeping subpoena from the U.S. Department of Justice that sought to obtain sensitive medical records of transgender minors receiving care at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP).

Trans youth and their families in Pennsylvania saw a significant legal victory on Friday, just not the one many in Pittsburgh had been hoping for.

"In September, Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and Boston Children's Hospital both successfully quashed the DOJ's subpoena in federal court to protect their patients' privacy and are actively communicating with the families impacted. In contrast, UPMC's silence has left parents and transgender youth feeling abandoned and vulnerable, worried that private records going back to January 2020 containing Social Security numbers, addresses, and personal communications will be released and weaponized against them."

"The public needs to know that UPMC is allowing parents to be stripped of the right to make medical decisions for their own children and that their own private medical records could be exposed, and they need to get involved in the fight. It's not just our families at risk - it's everyone's rights and everyone's privacy," said [VM], the parent of a trans teenager.

"UPMC must do its part: fight the subpoena and take concrete action to protect patient medical records, defend medical freedom, and uphold parental rights."
