The deck’s lines are so dependent on the desired endboard that a careless misplay could be the diff between a multi-layered endboard with 7+ disruptions and a weak field that loses to a single board breaker

The Eternaut (Oesterheld/Breccia) is one of the greatest comics ever created. It was created in a time of rising political dictatorship and its author was “disappeared” a few years later.

And realizing that this is an untapped lens of interpretation for the series just kind of “engages” me, you know?
I’m curious now! I want to see what other people gleam from the character and the series by viewing them through this lens of mental health and analysis!

And not to speak backhandedly about dissociation as a coping mechanism for a liberating moment of peace (people suffering through difficult mental heath have to do what they have to do), but I just think it’s interesting that I couldn’t find a single comment speaking on this element of Shinpei…

Shinpei’s time-traveling is almost heralded as something to look up to for all the self-sacrifice he makes by undergoing each leap
But from the lens of mental health, it can also be seen as a child dissociating to escape the larger issues he’s avoiding… he’s just choosing one battle over another.
If I’m recalling correctly, the most that the series touches on this is a line where a friend acknowledges that Shinpei hasn’t slept in the past 7 or 8 time loops he’s gone through because he’s constantly had to operate in a state of survival mode… but that’s all

As en educator, when I see somebody like Shinpei try to “remove themselves” from their feeling instead of processing them… I see a hurt human who has had to mature at a rapid rate for the sake of survival… and it hurts to see that in another person
And yet the series rarely touches on this…
Seeing as how the death of his best friend is one of the first things we learn about Shinpei (as it’s his entire reason for returning home), it paints him as a character suffering from unresolved trauma at the moment.
We later learn he is in fact suffering from SEVERAL layers of unresolved trauma…
Shinpei (like many popular anime protagonists) is just a teenager.
And I’m not going to filibuster about “omg, could you imagine if a kid really went through this?!”
But Shinpei is framed as a down-to-earth boy who is struggling to process his feelings — particularly the passing of his best friend…
…I think there’s a lot of depth to be discovered by viewing his words NOT as a stoic line about the need to be objective and level-headed in times as stress, and more as an almost desperate cry for help from a teenage boy who is trying to process several layers of trauma & grief…

To be a little more fair to the series, the “bird’s eye view” catchphrase by the main character (Shinpei) alludes to his supernatural ability to ascend to a higher dimension to travel across time.
I’ve read from others online insisting that this is why he repeats the line so much, but…
