Thank goodness I kept my French press when we bought our coffee maker. Last night's excitement involved a certain naughty kitty knocking the coffee carafe onto the kitchen floor and shattering it. What a mess. Luckily it was empty. Could have been worse. Happy Monday.

I know the world is shit right now and it feels kind of dumb to be excited about art, but I just submitted a story to an competitive anthology. I worked really hard on it and I'm super proud of it. The odds of it getting accepted are probably one in 10,000 or so, but that's okay. It's what I can do.

Thread from last night. I live in KS. It is a state with a small population (just under 3 million). There is a vibrant LGBTQIA+ life here, but resources can be scarce, and a lot of awfulness happened quickly. I will be adding to the thread when I have more information.

Kansas revokes driverβs licenses from trans residents in latest assault on rights
Law demanding IDs match βsex at birthβ also includes bathroom ban provision for trans people in public buildings
There are too many things happening in this country to be enraged about. That's the strategy. Here's one that's particularly cruel. I hope the citizens of Kansas come together to help their family, friends, and neighbors who are no longer allowed to drive. www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026...

Fed up with your world? Visit ours. Picture of the Clarkesworld robot looking over at the cover of our February issue. That cover features a robot looking out at the sea while standing on the beach with their hands clasped behind their back. The water comes gently towards their feet. Peaceful ocean and sky. A contemplative moment of peace. Cover art by Matt Dixon.

Gladys Mae West obituary: mathematician who pioneered GPS technology
She made key contributions to US cold-war science despite facing huge barriers as a Black woman.
No joke: I got angry hate mail today for writing an obituary of a Black woman scientistβbecause the person felt she did didnβt deserve the recognition.
Which just makes me want to share it again: www.nature.com/articles/d41...

One of those "here are the tropes" promo image for Brennan LaFaro's The Denizens, promising:
- small town setting
- Salem's Lot Vibes
- Zombies!
- grief horror
- witchcraft!
With a quote from Rachel Harrison, reading:
"Mesmerizing, with a quiet but profound sense of dread"
THE DENIZENS
BY BRENNAN LAFARO
Just because it's dead doesn't mean it's allowed to rest...
A small southern town surrounded by a living cemetery was the last place Sam Everett expected to find himself after the sudden death of his wife. Desperate to get away from the city and its memories, Sam flees to the tight-knit community of Maylene's Hollow.
Except the Hollow holds a secret. The town won't allow its dead to rest. Forced to wander the earth for hundreds of years, the denizens of the woods have had enough.
With the help of a mysterious widow who may also be a murderer, the town's matriarch who seems to possess magical abilities, and an ornery giant who believes the dead may be right to rebel, Sam must learn to let go of the dead in order to truly live
It's out on the 17th... so here, for your pleasure, is @brennanlafaro.bsky.social's THE DENIZENS, deconstructed π§ββοΈποΈπ³

Screen grab from the Dark magazine site showing opening few lines of story "Hunger".
Hey friends! I have a brand new story up at The Dark. Somewhat autobiographical, and one of the favorite things I've written for that. I hope you'll give it a read. It is a bit strange and dark.
