Manufacturing Consent - Wikipedia

This needs amplification! One thing they said in the video was about manufacturing consent, which got me to look up that book (and concept) and now I have to read more:

Not stalking you! But I first discovered you thru the ducklings and your dad. Then I listened to some of your audiobooks. Sorry to now hear about the radiotherapy. I had chemo (and radiation) in 2008 and it wipes you out so the best thing to recover is rest, and more rest. All the best.

I’m listening to the Starship Alexandria calendar but I didn’t know you were doing others!

If you take a cognitive awareness test, and you believe it is an IQ test, you have failed both such tests.

I've been saying this all along. πŸ’―

What we can, morally, disagree on are the categories and extent of what we define as β€œcommon goods”, or the things that everyone should have access to so they can be participating members of society.

Is This Just MAGA’s New Deal? Defining Trumpism to defend against it

Do yourself a favour and listen to this episode of Amicus with @dahlialithwick.bsky.social
It's about how democracy works and how we can make change within democracy.

It has always been about money (and money is power and fame). While people are obsessed about the Epstein stuff, they forget he was a money guy first. What Russia β€œhas” on Trump is about money.

I thought this also, until I read @rebeccasolnit.bsky.social β€˜s recent piece on exposing people for who they really are.

Thanks for sharing that article. I grew up in the 70s, hearing about the feminizing of law and medicine, like it was a bad thing. It hasn’t even been 100 years since women got the vote, so men are still getting over that. We just have to keep raising consciousnesses until those with power get it.

This was great! Enjoyed the whole thing, especially the bit in the middle where they talk about not selling out to private equity/consolidation interests. And the interviews with people like Bill Withers were so good.

Reminds me of actors who say β€œI’m not a doctor, I just play one on tv.” He played a type on tv.

Private Benjamin. Perceived as a light comedy but really a feminist rebellion.

And it’s also about money laundering!

This seems like something we should all be aware of.

And! There’s more than just sex in the E. Files. He was a money guy. And there was money laundering with the Russians! I bet there’s a ton of stuff about money that the elites don’t want people to see.

I think we should start using moral language to condemn this sort of behaviour. β€œThis is wrong.” Even when people are morally repugnant, they want to be seen as morally good, which is why they find excuses for their bigotry etc. Call them out. Don’t let them excuse their moral failings.

Thoughtful thread, even quoting Cultural Studies and Stuart Hall.

Authoritarians claim the power not just to tell all of our stories but to select the definitive story that says who we are, what our nature, why we're here, in order to cast themselves as both forever hero protagonists while also endlessly victimized.

So now I feel like I have to explain that *my* literalness is about whether something is true and real. Ha ha.

They got what they wanted:

1. access to government records

2. breaking the government so they could then say β€œsee? it doesn’t work” and take over its profitable operations.

Social hierarchy societies succeed b/c they concentrate power in a few who wield it with violence against the many. Egalitarian societies are better for all but power is dispersed which allows someone to concentrate power. The trick is to keep power dispersed. This is our lesson.

Indeed. With clearer consequences for injustices and better definitions of injustice.

And Toto is a hero because he isn’t human and so goes straight for the truth that is grounded on reality and doesn’t get diverted by human equivocation.
