Quiet, emotional moments are plumbed with depth & clarity, AND I found myself feverishly page-turning to see what happens next. I was reminded of one of my favorite books, THE ART OF FIELDING, in Wendt's ability to render a sports drama with universal human resonance in the most beautiful language.

It's been a joy to read O'Brien's prose again, deftly rhythmic, moving from the heartfelt to the wry. He's a master at introducing constellations of human beings, drawing out details that make each distinct & compel the reader's sympathy, & then bringing everything together into a singular journey.

It's a heart-pounding, page-turning story, and at the center, the young Bird, who ranged from effacing to awkward to abrasive in the spotlight. O'Brien, as he did in CHARLIE HUSTLE, brings an empathetic but clear-eyed perspective to the complexities of his hero.
