Paywall protecting predators @nature.com ? Seems like the kind of info that should NOT be subscription only. But guess that only matters if you actually care about scientists and keeping them safe. Bottom line/almighty dollar is clearly more important to Nature.

Hey.

Tell people when they do good job.

When you like the stuff they make.

When you like the characters they’ve created.

The stories they’ve told.

Nobody hears it as often as you think bc everyone thinks everyone hears it all the time.

Trust. They don’t.

Tell. Them.

If you did not know Hans, his work in "The Doctor Is In" captures so much of who he genuinely was--especially that impish sense of humor. Watching this video and a few others cheered me up and brought back some really fun memories.

wrong; one; my very best PhD student was female; smartest woman I ever knew;
she has decided to quit being a professor and is now an accupuncturist; that
is the point; no matter how smart, she wanted to be liked or some such crap;
also she failed to be brilliant when I made her leave Yale; she needed a man in
order to be smart; they all do

Note how Schank also takes credit for his former PhD student's brilliance, saying "she failed to be brilliant when I made her leave Yale; she needed a man in order to be smart; they all do."

This is the logic that allows men to justify exploiting women's intellectual labor for their own gain.

I'm shocked and really saddened by the news that Hans Sues passed away. He was in a class of his own. He loved paleo and worked on everything, he was generous, he gave sound advice. Even more, he was genuinely fun to be around, especially if you could get his laugh to click into the next gear.

Hans Sues was one of the best. He was always so kind & encouraging, accommodating me when I visited collections & let me look at things he was working on (rare in paleo). He always had such a joy about him, a great giggle & such a wealth of knowledge. He was a wonderful mentor & a good person.

May his legacy live on through all that knew him and the students he mentored. Our thoughts are with his family at this incredibly difficult time πŸ’”.

Hans Sues was a phenomenal paleontologist, and a kind person. It is nice to have known someone like him in the field. For those of you who didn't know him, enjoy listening to him talk dinosaur facts. He was a good one and will be genuinely missed.
