Unless people FULLY COMMIT to making every detail meaning something, I care not for it. I may not personally like maximalism, but I can respect when it's well done and done with passion and not out of cynicism.

this is very over-worded way to say I disagree with most FNaFtubers on a fundamental level because the way they engage with media and art makes me gnash my teeth and I think TalesGames is and always was stupid.

But when everything is compressed into one frame and distilled with individual meaning, your central focus can blur, and you can lose sight of what the actual subject was. In some ways, it feels too limiting.

It removes the opportunity for the audience to interpret outside of the author.

That's not to say that trying to capture all those details isn't impressive - it is! It takes a lot of attention, and effort, and I respect the effort to capture as much as you can in a composition. If that's the objective, it's a worthy one, and I love how passionate people are about it.

I think if you try to grasp for meaning in every fiber of a story stretched out across every medium, you can lose sight of the core. In capturing every detail, your depth of field is increased, but you clutter the picture. At a certain point you gotta wonder if some details are worth keeping.

My firmest belief is that the spinoff books are mostly single one-off stories with very little bearing on anything and would be more loved if they were regarded as such. I respect people trying to find meaning in them but ultimately they are isolated spooky Goosebumps books to me.

I hope in the FNAF 2 movie we get a scene where Henry says something like “He was my partner” and it’s said with a really sad tone that you can’t tell if it’s sad because Henry regrets ever meeting William or because he has to use past tense

so in semi-relation to the actual topic, I think he should not adopt or take care of Michael or any other children until he can actually take care of himself. if he was in a better and more stable place mentally I think he'd do an okay job.

Like he can and should be held accountable for his poor decisions but until he gets his ass to the psychiatric hospital and starts taking meds I'm not going weigh him on the same playing field as Edwin or someone else who was completely aware of the reality they inhabited.

It's hard to place Henry on the scale of "normal actions" in TFC because when Charlie dies he's literally unable to perceive reality the same. His choices were bad and he definitely hurt people around him, but I find it hard to "blame" him in the same way I would a person not suffering delusions.

To me Henry's narrative is saturated with themes of mental illness, and as someone who grew up with family members who were loving but extremely flawed and never treated or managed their symptoms properly in ways that negatively impacted me, I find that very compelling.

That's fair! I just see a lot of people push aside the traumatic experience of losing Charlie and his psychotic breakdown as a very important factor in his failed parenting of Sammy when that's kind of the whole point. It was not for lack of trying that he ends up being subpar.

He's not a perfect parent and also he has a truckload of issues he should deal with but there is no doubt in my mind he genuinely loved both his children. That's what makes it even more tragic, how this delusion consumes him to the point he pushes his loved ones away.

I will defend Henry I don't think he's as bad as some people make him out to be. It was never just Sammy specifically, he isolated himself from EVERYBODY after Charlie died and it wasn't like he didn't love Sammy before - he very much did. Dare I say he would've reacted the same if Sammy died.

Fair! I like to think they'd get along okay eventually but initially they're going to be hissing and clawing like two stray feral cats forced in the same room. One they realize the other isn't a threat they'll chill out.

watch all of this be wrong when they drop a trailer on Friday and Henry shows up in a fucking turtleneck or something ( ¬‿¬)

None of this is really based in theory minutiae, because that's not my preferred sphere of media analysis, but I think from a narrative perspective it makes sense. Two characters who are in conflict actually have some core elements that are similar, and that's subtly reflected in their wardrobe.

I think Henry and Mike might be at odds with each other, in part because they have some things in common (RBF, blunt, avoidant) and that actually causes more tension. Mike might even actively blame Henry for not stopping or fighting William, and for the Puppet/Charlie menacing them in the film.

Even at his worst, Mike had some work friends like Jeremiah, and someone to take care of in Abby. (Assumedly) Henry has no one. That, and a much stronger self hatred because he COULD have potentially saved Charlie, and as an adult and a parent, he had a much more active responsibility.

Have zero proof of this, so bear with me, but I'm hoping/imagining Henry as being someone extremely jaded and cold and closed off - similar to how Mike was at the start of the first movie after years of poorly coping with Garrett's death. But Henry is still perpetually stuck in that cycle.

Assuming Henry in the movie dresses somewhat similarly (please don't let them use the Encyclopedia design as a base that would be EVIL) the answer is could be in part that they are character foils. Henry is what Mike could've become if he lost Abby.
