I have been accused of being radicalized. No. I was born with basic empathy, it’s the world that’s decided has decided I am radical.

If we lose it all, we as a country did this to ourselves. No individuals, the country. Those who could stand up… went along and betrayed us all.

I’m at the point where I feel trepidation every time I open blue sky. What crazy thing has happened now. The mean crazies are in charge of the asylum known as the United States.

All this has been too much. Just trying to hold it together and continue with my little life.

Seems to me, also, those paid the most in the US contribute the least value. Meanwhile artists, teachers and nurses work from the heart.

Two pies made from a pumpkin I grew and apples saved from our trees. I live on a city lot. No grass in the backyard any longer. Gardens for produce.

Happy thanksgiving. Our table is ready. Food is cooking. So much from our garden ( cauliflower, potatoes, yams) and a free turkey and ham. Stuffing made from bread I baked. Herbs from the garden. Celery I grow on my sunporch. No cost but we will have plenty to eat. Leftovers too.

Starting a scrappy zig zag quilt. It will be smaller. Pulled out my containers of scraps. I’m going to use some of them up, well hopefully most of them.

City tax. County tax. State tax. You’re trapped as you need electricity. Wasn’t like this in Illinois or Indiana.

I got my electric bill $465. What? Actual usage $60. Rest was fees. Connection, transportation of electricity, taxes, and service fees. How on earth can I bring that down? I can’t.

So young folk, make friends with your neighbors. Especially your old ones. We love a good trade. Shovel their snow out of the goodness of your heart. Often, we will bring by stuff over as a thank you. Like fresh baked cookies.

She came by later with a bottle of white wine. I can’t drink it, can you? Well, heck yeah. I just finished baking bread. Would you like a loaf? Heck yeah. We laughed and traded. She loves my homemade loaves. I think she smelled it baking during our first trade. Face to face relationships matter.

Here’s how the trade went. We say hello in passing. She said that the canned green beans, peas, and corn were giving her gas. I said I had an over abundance of carrots and potatoes. Want to trade? We bartered. I added a pack of ground coffee I couldn’t use. She added three packs of pasta. Deal.

My full pantry

My full pantry

This is how you do it. Get to know your neighbors. Today, we traded. I had things she needed. She had things she needed. Like in the 1930’s, trading helped people to survive. Both of us have stocked pantries now.

Naughty dogs tore up toilet paper.

Naught dogs tore up toilet paper. It galls me that stores have raised the price of toilet paper so high. It’s made in the US. No tariffs. It’s just greed no need.

Took a look. Yep, few took notice of the wisdom I posted. They don’t want to know. Not much different than the MAGAs. Ignore old folk wisdom. Learn the hard lessons on your own. So sad. Too bad.

Same thing with germs. She believed in vaccines. She lost seven siblings to whooping cough, diphtheria, measles. She felt it was important to wash your hands often. But being exposed to certain germs. You build immunity. We are too clean focused today. Never got so much as a cold. Still don’t.

My grandma had a theory, you expose yourself to different foods at a young age, you build immunity and not allergies. People laughed. Doctors today have discovered that if you are exposed to certain foods at a young age, you are less likely to develop allergies to it. Grandma was wise.

She would trade her stock with others. Who has peach trees? She had the best apples. Guess who got to pick them but only off the ground. Made the best jams and pie fillings.

Her back yard was a garden. No grass. What we didn’t eat fresh, she canned. Food all winter. She always had her flower gardens. We need beauty, she said. She grew flowers she could make into medicine. Made her own blackberry brandy for colds. We got dosed first with that and Vicks under our nose.

She raised chickens. Fresh eggs. When they got old, chop off their heads, dunk in cold water to remove feathers easier. Pluck. Sunday dinner, soup, chicken and dumplings. Chicken salad sandwiches to barter with.
