The lore is the lineman was at work when my mom was due to be born, so climbed a pole and tapped in to the line to place a call to the hospital. They said the baby had arrived, so he headed there. Different times!

One was a truck driver (Teamsters, Local 49, Lowell, MA).
The other was a fire controlman in the Navy during the war, then a telephone company lineman (Fitchburg, MA).

Was there last week to bring kiddo to a birthday party at Dave and Buster's. To my surprise, it was packed. Every garage level full (went to roof), food court packed. Seemed contrary to the stories.

This was a legit midwestern lake-effect snow here in New England. Glad I got out in it before dark--so great to walk around the city and not see a single car, and instead people walking in the streets with smiles on their faces.
