Bernie Sander’s 2028 litmus test would strangle America’s golden goose

Bernie Sander’s 2028 litmus test would strangle America’s golden goose

Surprise! The Jeff Bezos-owned Washington Post is against my 5% billionaire wealth tax. I wonder why?

If enacted, Bezos would owe $12 billion in taxes, and an average family of 4 would receive a $12,000 direct payment.

Poor Jeff would be left with just $224 billion to survive.

rendering of a proposed pedestrian bridge in downtown Edmonton

This Taproot story about the ATB Place renewal reminded me how great it would be for us build the pedestrian bridge pictured below.

As it stands, 100 Street near Hotel MacDonald is downtown's biggest chasm.

EXCLUSIVE: At more than 30 installations, U.S. commanders told troops the war on Iran is a Christian war.

The Military Religious Freedom Foundation has been “inundated” with more than 110 complaints.

Those three downed jets run around $90 million each.

It cost $20 million a year to operate the food kitchens serving 816,000 people in Sudan.

Every policy has tradeoffs.

“I am willing to tolerate poorer people getting priced out of my neighborhood to maintain its 19th century aesthetic” is a perfectly fine thing to believe but you should be willing to say that with your whole chest.

We should evaluate policies based on their real world effects, not their proponents’ stated goals.

Historic preservation froze the built form of the West Village and turned what had been a diverse middle class neighborhood into an exclusive enclave for the super-wealthy.

$40 billion in debt because our government refuses to touch royalties while oil & gas production (and profits) are at record highs. Austerity isn't a necessity, it's a choice based on who this government puts first - ordinary people or corporate interests. #ABLeg #ABPoli #CDNPoli

re: hockey, Muhammad Ali, one of the greatest boxers ever to live, gave up three years in the prime of his life — years in which his fighting would have been at peak; actual money incalculable — rather than fight in an unjust war, so noping out on grandpa’s burger bash should be an easy choice

It drives me crazy that most people think that COVID-19 vaccines don't reduce transmission. They don't bring Reff <1, but the difference between spreading an infection to 2 people vs 1 person is huge at the scale of the population.

Why can't I have an 800 square foot, two storey house shipped to me in pieces for $150,000?

Haven't heard much from Carney lately on housing.

Here in Edmonton we seem to have the zoning piece figured out, now we need to reduce building costs.

(We would build a backyard house if it didn't cost $300,000+ to construct!)

Reward for the NDP? Voted out post haste.

The UCP kneecapped our thriving renewables industries for spite alone, and yet the legend that conservatives are "good with the economy" will certainly continue to thrive.

I find the label unhelpful and often inaccurate. It tends to shut down conversations rather than deepen them.

that's exactly what a NIMBY would say though

Yup. And because of cars that snow is toxic, so rather than just putting it in nearby piles we have to burn extra diesel driving it out to *special* soing areas.

If you are serious about "never again" then remember: it's not about standing up to a line of tanks when the camps are already running. It's about standing up to social & professional pressure when the whole thing is just getting started, when it's not yet cool to do so. That's bravery that matters.
