like I used to treat those as organic consequence of tech and capitalism, but it's starting to feel deliberate.

And the iPhonication of Android is further making this more apparent. the 3 stages of enshittification:
1. be good to consumers (cheap, fun open(ish)-market devices)
2. be good to business customers (Google ads making like 80% of apps unusable)
3. be good to investors (wierd AI, and vendor lock-in)

Boggles my mind that many young people would prefer to be phoneless than not use an iPhone (anecdotal) and are willing to pay unholy amounts to keep THEIR OWN PHOTOS AND LIVES on a server somewhere behind a pay wall.

My running theory is that big tech purposefully abstracted consumer technology and services to a point of reliance which has consequently led to a new culture/generation of people who don't _really_ know how to use computers without them

I'm enjoying rust so much. Once you get over the initial friction, it feels easier to do a lot of things in it than other "looser" languages like C#. Basically if something feels hard to do in rust, there's probably a better way to do it.

Like I would have little to no issue if there was an effort to improve Linux with Rust, except there is and Linux devs don't like it. also, their goals are clearly in high contrast with Linux/Unix that even if they did do a fork, there'd be no point

3. the kind pf changes they have made would NOT be simple in a linux development environment: micro kernel workarounds, new file system etc.
4. the point is very much to do away with some of the inherently linux/unix issues. would be silly to fork those issues or build around them

Redox is not a distro actually, its a new os built from the ground up independent of linux, posix etc.while some of its goals include being "somewhat" compatible with current linux applications, the OS itself is a whole separate thing:
