I think I hear what you're saying. But, like...they're not mutually exclusive. He's running as a Democrat. As opposed to Cuomo, who's running as an Independent. I would argue that when Democrats are at their best, they're also Democratic Socialists. Mamdani would surely say so too.

Democratic Socialists are an Organization, NOT a political party. It's like you arguing that you can't be a member of Rotary AND a Democrat. You can't belong to a Book Club AND be a Democrat. You actually can.

Again--"republican" indicates political party. So--no, you can't. But can you be a republican socialist? You can, but you won't get many votes in your Republican primary. This isn't difficult.

You can be a democrat AND a "democratic socialist." One indicates your political party. The other indicates your beliefs regarding how and where money should be distributed for society's greatest good. There's a long honorable line of socialists in the Democratic party. (see Francis Perkins)

I use it as an insight to understanding other peoples' ignorance. Because, for instance, I can remember when I was apolitical--I had no idea what was going on and didn't care. And it's the only way I can understand how people now could be that way.

Once a month, I think about how highly problematic that scene was and how, as a 16 year old in 1984, I didn't quite have the wherewithal to recognize it as such (though there was a glimmer of an inkling). I blame society. Because that scene is all kinds of inexcusable.
