UPDEPP proudly congratulates “Direk” Kyla Danelle Romero (who graduated from the B.A. Applied Psychology program in 2023) who has earned the distinction of becoming the first Filipino woman to have her work nominated for an award at the Cannes Film Festival.
Agapito, which was written and co-directed by Romero and Arvin Belarmino, is one of eleven short films selected from among 4,781 others to be nominated for the Palme d'Or du court métrage (Short Film Palme d’Or), which is the highest prize given to a short film at the Cannes. Yet another of the 11 nominated films, “Ali”, was written by Romero and Belarmino, although it was directed by Bangladeshi filmmaker Adnan Al Rajeev.
In its synopsis for the film, Rolling Stone says Agapito […] tells the story of a young bowling pin setter named Mira (Nour Hooshmand), whose days are spent manually resetting the pins of a rundown bowling alley. While the job is dangerous, Mira needs the work to support her older brother Junior (André Miguel), who lives with cerebral palsy and developmental delays.
On her Instagram, Romoro describes the journey of the film as being “from the halls of the duckpin alley, to the four huge corners of the Grand Theater Lumiere.”
“I dedicate this to my late father,” Romero added. “To you, papa Danny Romero. For raising me in a sports facility, surrounded by people who love what they do. Something that resonated when we made this story, set in a duckpin alley in Bulacan.”
Taken by surprise when the news of the nomination came out, Belarmino and Romero’s team is currently raising funds so that more of Agapito’s cast and crew can attend the awards ceremony.
The 2025 Cannes Film Festival officially begins on May 13, 2025, and the Short Film Palme d’Or will be awarded at the Palmares ceremony on Saturday, May 24, 2025 by the Jury chaired by German film director, screenwriter and producer Maren Ade. (Toni Erdmann, 2016; Everyone Else, 2009).

As far as I can tell, #UPDilimanExtensionPrograminPampanga #UPDEPP seems to be the first UP unit to have an official Bluesky account.(Someone confirm?)
Formerly UP San Fernando before moving to the Clark Freeport Zone, the sattelite campus is also known as #UPPampanga, or more commonly, #UPClark.

There's a guy two tables singing quietly. Either faculty or staff, but likely faculty. This being UP, I can't tell if he's (a) horribly out of tune, or (b) he's singing an indigenous chant.
(I lean towards indigenous chant. I wish I could make out some of the words but he's too far away.)

Checking. Tired. Thankfully SmeaGal and Pippin provide a reliable dose of Dopamine and Oxytocin.
(I just need Serotonin, so sleep and some walking.)

Schedule anxiety kept me awake in bed last night, leaving me literally weak today. Somehow that makes the metaphor of spiritual nourishment hit a bit harder than usual. (Also, yes, postpandemic our Church distributes the communion elements in hygenic packaging - a practice for which I am thankful.)

I thought I had no time for anything but checking, and realized I had no time for anything but checking. So now I'm spending all my time recalibrating everything I can get my hands on. :p

Didn't have many encounters with Rizal this year, save for previewing the Richard E. Grant voiced Noli Me Tangere audiobook. (Distracting accent, so no.) But Rizal is never not part of the background of Filipino life. Glad to celebrate Pepe's life and works today. Happy Rizal Day, folks.

Varies significantly from hilot to hilot. P50 might be a remembered price though. Hilot cost that much 15ish years ago and prices shoulda gone up by now.
200 sounds reasonable, unless the hilot has no actual skill (e.g. diagnosis, massaging, etc if you don't buy into the mystical stuff)

Beginning to better curate my feed.
Satisfactory experience re. Soc. Science Academics, Geeks, and Authors.
Need find more illustrators, musicians, book and audiobook reviewers, theologians, and historians.
Feed is also far too West-centric for now,so I'm seeking out more local voices.

Return-to-office (RTO) mandates lead to abnormally high employee turnover, especially for female/more senior/more skilled employees.
It also takes significantly longer to fill these job vacancies after RTO mandates.

Of course. I seek them out myself and am okay with being in them. But notifications would let me at least be aware of incoming attention, and, based on category, from which sectors.
If I'm about to be deluged by folks who disagree with, say, my StarTrek:Enterprise fandom, I'd prefer a heads up. :)

Still pretty new at this; you aren't notified when you're added to a pack or list? Or have that option at available at least?
That feels sorta ... Sad? Weird? Vaguely unsafe?
Woulda wanted that feature.
Oh well. They'll keep improving, I guess.

I had this talk with a friend the other day. He said that AI has come for creative work first, because it’s subjective.
And nobody cares that much, because there is a lot of distaste for the arts and entertainment world in this society at this time. But it CAN and WILL come for other jobs.

The textile book (Araneta and Lim, 2014), meanwhile, is hefty, well photographed by Neal Oshima, and from the little I've seen, quite insightful.
Also a steal at p1,500.

The Ceramicware booklet (Tan,2016) is very specific to a particular collection but has enough general information to be acessible. And at p100, it was quite a steal.

We spent time today with a balikbayan friend and her fam. The activity of choice was a trip to Ayala museum.
Which means I HAD to check the shop for any inexpensive publications, buying them before they're all sold out in light of tiny publication runs.
Haul:
Textiles book=p1500;
Ceramics=p100.
