As Rabbi Elchonon Wasserman observed, nationalism and socialism were the two pre-eminent political manifestations of modernity, and National Socialism was an amalgam of both.

Bernie Sanders is not, in fact, a secret Nazi. Rather, I make this observation in support of my view that National Socialism represents a kind of logical terminus for modernity.

This aside, as Tage Lindbom has shown, the National Socialist leadership very much did believe themselves to be socialists. I make this argument not for the sake of the kind of crude guilt-by-association arguments against socialism that conservatives regularly make

The logic here is a little faulty. If the premise is granted that it was a mendacity to convert workers to the National Socialist cause, then is not at least the National Socialism in which these converts believed authentically socialist?

I’ve even encountered the bizarre Marxist notion that the socialism of National Socialism was a ruse to fool the working class into supporting it, and that it is therefore inauthentically socialist.

It is one of the curiosities of the post-war era that there is such resistance to the idea that National Socialists were, in fact, socialists. I'd wager that, outside German speaking countries, most people have no idea that "Nazi" is a contraction of National Socialist.

Tage Lindbom was a communist until he underwent psychotherapy. It is not for nothing that he characterized Marx as an exploiter of hatred. One wonders how many would be cured of their commitment to communism by undergoing therapy?

If we accept that, as a generalization, women's primary natural vocation is to be wife and mother then is not the denigration of this calling, including by so called feminists, to be numbered amongst the most misogynistic of perspectives?

It may well be one of those institutions of modernity that, once a possibility, cannot be abolished despite its corrosive effects without causing immense and unacceptable misery.

One wonders if this has not had a kind of morally crippling effect, in that it has gone quite some way to make unmediated and morally unambiguous charitable action well nigh an impossibility? This is not a rallying cry for the destruction of the welfare state.

Once established, welfarism is almost never repealed (and even when it is, this is usually short lived). Now, almost all Traditional societies had provisions for the needful, but they were never as systematic and extensive as those of the modern state.

The welfare state is a near universal phenomenon in modernity. Almost every ideology accepts it at this juncture except for the most hardline libertarians and technically speaking, anarchists (although what they propose is functionally equivalent).

You don't think this is a little hyperbolic? I really don't have a dog in this fight, but it reminds me of a Republican who once told me all Democrats are "Marxists". Political commentary that is so constantly histrionic leads me to believe people can't handle electoral competition.

With the contemporary puritanical hypersensitivity around age-gap relationships, one would have thought Foucault, Sartre, Guttari, Deleuze, de Beauvoir and Derrida would be up for cancellation. But apparently not.

It is symptomatic of modern inversion that thumos is concentrated at the bottom of the socio-economic hierarchy today, when Traditionally it was mostly to be found towards the top.
