He clutches at his chest as he tries to gasp for breaths that never come, he lifts his head and comes face to face with the starry sky outside his window, he’ll always know how to find his reggie out there, forever out of reach.

It’s when he’s alone in his room that night that it all hits him, he doesn’t make it to his bed before his knees buckle under him, feeling all to familiar to the night everything fell apart.

So now he sits with Sirius wrapped around his middle, screaming his throat raw, suppressing his feelings to be there for his best friend.

He just never found the right time when it was happening, and then when it was over James wanted to forget it, push it far far away from his mind and forget the way his heart clenched every time he saw a head of black curls or smelled fresh parchment.

He never did tell Sirius about his whirlwind romance with his little brother, there was no mention of the long nights in the astronomy tower, of the stolen glances and whispered affections.

The news of Regulus’ death hit the Potter household like a hurricane. Sirius sobbed in James’ arm for hours, James kept as much composure as he could muster.

James is crying, he’s crying and it’s Regulus’ fault

Not everything can last forever, no matter how much you may want it.

James opens his mouth to say something and despite himself Regulus hopes. ‘Forgive me anyway. Love me anyway. See what I have done and love me through it.’ But James’ mouth closes again and he drops his gaze. Regulus turns on his heels and walks out the door.

His eyes are bloodshot and puffy and everything in Regulus’ being fights against it, it goes against everything he’s come to know to see James sad. The meer sight is making Regulus want to take down whatever caused it.

And well.

James meets his eyes and Regulus can’t help his body’s natural reaction to being under the gaze of James Potter, even now his breath hitches in his throat and his stomach feels like it's doing backflips.

Just two weeks ago they were tangled up together in this very room, laughing and carefree. Like the world couldn’t touch them, couldn’t harm them. Regulus let himself believe that, that they would be okay, that they would last forever.

His whole body is shaking as sobs tear through him, all the while he’s repeating “you didn’t” “you were forced, say you were forced.”. Each muttered sentence sounds like a wounded animal and sends crack after crack through Regulus’ heart.

The cuff of Regulus’ shirt stays wrapped around his elbow, the inky black darkness plastered on his wrist out for the world to see. He’s frozen, star struck as he stares at James breaking down, tears overflowing in his eyes and his knees buckling underneath him.

Regulus just stares, star struck, and he can’t help but join in. James’ laugh fills him with a warmth that he craves and it’s so so infectious, a beautiful sound that Regulus thinks the whole world should get to hear.

His whole body shaking with pure unadulterated joy and laughter, tears coming out of his eyes as he gasps for breath between laughs.
