I remember going to an info session when @crisisincarnate.bsky.social was in 6th form, and the college rattled out the figures on likely increased earnings from going to university. Paul did the maths in his head (despite being an arts graduate, he could do that ki d of thing)...

And today, there is very little correlation between qualification and earning potential once you factor in student loan repayment.

We all knew students whose choice of subject was based on future earning potential rather than love of subject. They were the dullest people imaginable.

How is this repeatedly made into a policy issue - by *all* parties - when the blunt fact of the matter is that grown adults who are obliged to pay for their own education, and relentlessly pursued to repay their loans, should be able to study whatever the fuck they want.

One significant - & dangerous - thing to watch for is professional commentators objecting to words rather than examining the evidence. It's pearl-clutching & cowardly, obviously, but also a deliberate attempt to avoid confronting exactly what they themselves are facilitating and often cheering on.
