That Moment, Small and Mundane β€œMother, I’ve decided what I want for my birthday,” Edelas said. The skies were gray, the air was chill, and the wind blustered. It was a respite from the oppressive summer heat, a present for all …

This week from my #ShortStory vault, a spirit celebrates her adopted daughter's birthday and bond over a shared interest.

If you like it, please share it in any way you can πŸ™‚

Another item for my wish list!

I've read The Forgotten Beasts of Eld, and I have in my library The Riddle Master of Hed and Heir of Sea and Fire, all of which are in their first editions with their lovely old-school art. I'm glad this collection pays homage to that art. McKillip is great too 😁

πŸ’™πŸ“š On this Thanksgiving, I'm thankful for family and several hours of reading time. I'm halfway through "To Green Angel Tower" by Tad Williams βš”οΈ

Amusingly, Morris was reacting in his day against good old-fashioned industrialization by striving towards an idealized, medieval way of life that, in his opinion, was more communal.

Ah, how things change, yet stay the same.

I'm proud to have recently purchased some books from a small press, for publishing some of William Morris's work long out of print and breathing new life into it.

Across so many aspects of our lives, it is clear to me that we need to support smaller, and shall I say, more communal, organizations, ones that better respect our humanity. For books, here is a way forward.

That's really eye-catching, the iridescence is cool. Congrats!

Seven (!) years later, and I realize that this introduction is missing a more compelling conflict. Alas, I'll remember that when I get back to writing about these two characters.

Please enjoy regardless πŸ˜‡

I usually save my comments for the afterword I put in the post, but as I was writing the blurb here for the link, I really wanted to say "two spirits awaken in the afterlife, and they must figure out <blah blah> before <something bad>". But I couldn't, it's pretty slice-of-life-y.

This week going through my #ShortStory vault:

A Glimmer of Light Golden sunlight poured into the parlor, painting a gilded outline on the face of Ilisan, my sweet neighbor. We weren’t talking about much at all, just the idle conversation of a lazy summer evening…

The spirits of a wife and husband at last get an opportunity in their afterlife they did not get in life, but at what cost?

What happens when two machines love each other? And what does that mean legally? "The Flaming Embusen" has some answers, and a healthy dose of social commentary.

Thank you @tadethompson.bsky.social !

I've already read my Ballantine paperback of The Sundering Flood, so I look forward to reading these. It's a shame that Morris's novels languish in obscurity, but his delightfully (artificially) archaic style is admittedly a hard sell to audiences who expect "normal" sounding prose.

I also liked (what I assume to be) Youtja chanting and vocalizations in the soundtrack, quite immersive.

I saw Predator: Badlands this weekend, and it was awesome. It pleased me to see a film trusting its audience enough to dedicate its whole opening to showing the Youtja culture AND have everyone talk in an alien language the whole time. That was very satisfying.

Learning about the variations finally made it click for me. Thanks Wikipedia! But of course, an encyclopedia has its limits, so your writings are quite illuminating.

And lo, I actually stumbled across your versemeter blog while googling a couple weeks ago. Small world!

Indeed, I found it very helpful. I'll bookmark it and come back to it in the future for reference. I've known for quite a while what strictly went into the meter, but I wondered how we could get such lovely language strictly following it, and it was only recently that I learned about the variations.

I found it to be a good exercise. It's one thing to know what iambic pentameter is, but another to see it and feel it. And even if it doesn't build up my poetic muscle, then at least I've formed a deeper connection with the pieces.

My scansion of "Ode to Psyche" by John Keats

After a few different attempts over the years to write my own #poetry, particularly with meter (respect to modern poets to don't use meter, but I personally like the more old-fashioned stuff), I tried copying some poems and writing scansions of them. It was a lot of fun!

An excellent demonstration of the craft using the absurdity of the current moment/year/decade, with several other examples of good character writing to emulate. I've read other variations of this advice before, but that just means that it's good advice to remember and apply.

Very cool idea, I can see how that could shape the culture(s) of those species. Would be pretty thematic in a book or movie/show/game too. Isn't it great when you stumble across an idea and it takes you in awesome directions?

The Good Stuff It was a hot summer day here in The Middle of Nowhere. The sun had reached its zenith, casting hot, white light onto the land below. It was a dry heat, much as it had been for a while, as the crops…

Continuing my way through my old stuff. This was my first attempt at a first-person story back in 2017, and it turned out to be a seed of something much more I hope to return to one day.
