If they sold the farming business they could split the farm three ways. Or alternatively they could act like the farm was a business like any other and have shareholders including their offspring. #TheArchers

I definitely didn’t inherit the business. When I bought it I’d worked within it for over 10 years. I guess if the previous owner had been a farmer I’d not have had a chance to acquire it as he’d have had to give it to his daughters who’d never worked in it. #TheArchers

I don’t agree that the partner has to work on the farm or contribute money. Just being a spouse should be enough. #TheArchers

Why is a farm different from other businesses though? All family businesses would be in the same situation wouldn’t they? Make it a limited company and give shares to all your offspring if that’s how you want it to continue or maybe consider a Trust. #TheArchers

So all spouses should be excluded from the future proceeds and ownership of your partner’s business? Sounds weird to me. Not something I considered. My wife supported me when I owned a business - she would have deserved half if we’d divorced. I’m not a farmer though. #TheArchers

My current neighbours have run the box office for the ‘Pool folk festival for a few years. It’s moving to Durham this year as the buildings are no longer safe.
