My “conspiracy” theory is that all of this is done on purpose.

With no immigration reform, no one can “get in line.” With mass deportations in the loom, people are forced to do the minimum to survive. Companies still get profits from the labor, pay undocus super low, and don’t provide benefits.

There is a reason it’s called “living in the shadows.” No matter what you do, you can’t trust anyone. Any backhand comment could get you deported. People keep their head down, suffer in silence, and pray for reprieve.

Yet, #undocu labor uplifts economies, including the ones that want them deported.

I was undocumented for almost twenty years, it gave me some very valuable lessons.

1. Don’t engage with racists.
2. Don’t read the comments.
3. Laughter is defiance.

Those who would be targeted by mass deportations contribute more of value to America and its culture than do the those who want to mass deport them. We need to push back hard on the idea that the latter group represent "real America," because instead they are fundamentally hostile to America itself.
