NIMBY is often like that. "We want more affordable housing, but not if it means building any." "We want more local businesses, but not if that requires changing anything."

Where interpreting the Constitution is concerned, Mr. Trump thinks being born in America is a better qualification than having a degree in political science from an American university. That speaks volumes.

It may also be helpful that the Epstein files and Trump's connection to Epstein are suddenly back in the headlines.

This captures the naked-eye view pretty well. It's the first aurora I've been able to see unaided since the 90's, and the first one I've ever seen with any color but green. At times, it covered at least half the sky.

But the main reason the rapidly eroding support for Trump and the GOP isn't translating into increased support for Democrats is because the Democrats won't fight. So, yeah, the best play was probably to fight harder than they did.

Senate Democrats definitely threw away the only leverage they had and gained nothing in return. I don't have a good enough read to know if the Democrats were on the verge of getting something. The Republicans would obviously not tell us if they were just about to cave.

I'm not sure what their best play was here. I think they had to fight, and this was their one moment of leverage. But they were never going to win concessions. The shutdown was too convenient an excuse for Trump to hang the poor out to dry, just like the GOP has always wanted to.

I mean liberal as in favoring individual liberty, political equality, etc. In a traditionally patriarchal society, I don't see how feminism could be anything but liberal, in that sense.

And we're all familiar with TERFs. But the question still stands. While it's true that not everyone believes in intersectionality, feminism, itself, is an inherently liberal position, and conservatism is inherently anti-feminist. So, again, WTF are "conservative feminists"?

So (1) yes, America was not nearly as wild about Trump in 2024 as election results on a map dominated by sparsely populated areas suggests and (2) even what influence those areas have on a presidential election is greater than it would be if everyone's vote counted the same (as it should).

There are about 7.5 times as many people in New York City as there are in Montana, which has about 315 times the land area of NYC. But, infuriatingly, not every person's vote counts the same. New York State only gets 1 electoral vote per 722k people, versus 1 per 271k for Montana.

Republican priorities. Nationalism is more important than life.

I like good pens, but I can't imagine entrusting important information to my memory just because there are no good pens close to hand. Plus, my aversion to waste forces me to try to use the free, usually mediocre pens that people occasionally force on me at conferences and whatnot.

How the economy is doing is open to interpretation at this point, but costs are definitely not coming down.

If it weren't for Field Day participation ribbons, I would barely have gotten any awards for sports at all. And it's not like we didn't know what an empty honor it was to be forced to participate in a competition and then get a ribbon for participating. Kids know today, too.

I was in New York a month ago. First time. It was a lovely city. Amazing, really. I could see how half of America's GDP is generated by its 23 largest metro areas, with the NYC metro far and away the richest of those. It's absurd to call it "third world."
