To me, being vocal matters. So many of them live in a bubble where they genuinely believe what they're doing is popular. Pierce that bubble every chance you get. Doing so also makes other people feel safer in saying "this is bad", and that's how momentum builds.

All of these are fine ways to cope. So if you need to bounce between these as you move through publishing, that's fine too!
And it's such a valuable skill to recognize when one coping mechanism may no longer be serving you and try a new one.

Sometimes you may want to celebrate your rejected work, sometimes you might want to quietly forget it exists.
Sometimes you may want to lean into community, sometimes you may want space.
Sometimes you may want to dive into a new project to distract, sometimes you may need a break.

When I was querying for the fourth time, I bought a sticker for every rejection I got and put them on a special sticker shelf. And it was fun! Until it wasn't. After awhile, picking out a new sticker felt like it just gave me more time to wallow, so I stopped doing that.

In publishing, it's so important to practice emotional intelligence and learn how to navigate rejection and disappointment. Figure out coping mechanisms but also how to recognize when you need to switch strategies because the one you've been using doesn't work any more.

Phoebeβs acting career has stalled since the completion
of her hit tween series and her public breakup with her co-star. When sheβs offered the lead role on a high-budget superhero miniseries, she sees a chance to revive her career. Even if the showrunner is pushy, sexist, and determined to straight-wash her canonically asexual character. One thing sheβs not going to do? Fall for her new co-star.
Nolan may be an on-screen darling, but can barely carry a conversation off-script. Until he meets Phoebe, who couldnβt care less about his stardom or awkwardness. For the first time, Nolan feels like he can be himself, only to realize he doesnβt even know who he is behind the superstar persona. Heβs spent his whole life trying to please others, particularly his controlling mother, at the expense of figuring out his own life.
As Phoebe and Nolanβs off-screen chemistry becomes as undeniable as their on-screen chemistry, their delicately balanced lives collide, and theyβll need to learn to write their own happily ever afters.
An #EditorGuide for PHOEBE AND NOLAN MAKE A SCENE
A starlet trying to save her floundering acting career and a socially awkward teen heartthrob, cast as love interests, must fight the straightwashing of a canonically ace character, and their feelings for eachother.

I love writing rom-coms because I love giving a character my biggest insecurities and turning the entire story into a thesis that says YES YOU FLAWED PERSON, YOU ARE LOVEABLE
and getting to laugh along the way too.

I find it helpful when writing a romance to do a list of things pushing the characters together and things pushing them apart. Tension is all about balancing these two lists (until the list of pros wins in the end).

Eg, I've seen "they weren't actually ace, they just had trauma and weren't sex repulsed once they healed."
And? If the ace community gave them a safe space while they navigated that, that demonstrates the value of a-spec communities.

And actually find it very beautiful that people's understanding of their identity could change. Or that their identity itself could change. It's actually very normal for queer folk to change labels, people just use certain label changes as an excuse to invalidate identities they don't respect.

If someone previously identified as a-spec, I assume there was something in the identity that resonated with them or some aspect of the community that was valuable to them.
I actually find it very beautiful for people to find a home in a-spec communities, however long it feels like home for them

Saw recent discourse on people identifying as a-spec and then "changing their mind" (no longer identifying as a-spec).
And the issue is always the people trying to invalidate a given identity, not the people with evolving understandings of their identity.

Book cover of The Stardust Grail, featuring a cosmic background with a tentacled creature
Was looking for a voicey, accessible adult scifi, and a friend recommended The Stardust Grail by Yume Kitasei, and I absolutely loved it. Delightful cast of characters, big stakes, strong pacing, and worldbuilding that's intensive without bogging down the story.

My whole life, advocating war has been fed to me as βthe adult position,β akin to drinking your coffee black or reading the business section of the newspaper. Letβs be very clear β war is the childish nonsense of impulsive destructive idiots playing baby-brained video games with real human lives.
