Person in grocery store: βIs your name Joe? You look like someone I know named Joe.β
Placed an order for lunch today. No one asked my name. When my order was ready they called for Steve.
On more days than one occasion Iβve also been mistaken for someone named Mike.

3/ They look at the top of the charts (no matter the genre) & decide, based on that alone that ALL current music is shit even though theyβre only exposing themselves to a small fraction of it.

1/ I know of younger folks who are into songs they have on their playlists that receive no commercial/mainstream airplay. They discover them via going viral through platforms like Tik Tok or algorithms generated by whatever streaming platform theyβre using. Thatβs not to say thereβs no crossover.

Maybe in the past. Not now. Pretty much everyone I know, young and old, is streaming. Even when I listened to the radio regularly, I didnβt always discover new music that way. Then again, Iβm not your average listener.

I donβt have to look for it at all. Over time Iβve adapted to how things have changed. With the exception of most commercial radio, my methods of discovery havenβt changed that much. Of course, it doesnβt hurt to have access to streaming radio & streaming in general but I donβt rely solely on that.

Occasionally, artists Iβm a fan of make it to a mainstream level of success. That said, next to no new music I listen to fits that description.

2/ β¦.there are serious health benefits to listening to unfamiliar music. Introducing new artists and new songs increases the plasticity of our brains. Neuroplasticity, as a reminder, refers to the brainβs ability toΒ reorganizeΒ itself by forming new neural connections throughout life.

1/ There is no shortage of articles out there explaining why people start disliking new music. Much harder to find are articles explaining why people continue to love it.
